Neither my parents or in-laws made wills, all they left were happy memories and a funeral bill, God bless 'em.

Ah gentler days.  Marvellous.

My next door neighbour died a couple of years ago.  He was in his 70s but somehow had never got around to marrying the lady he'd lived with for a few decades.

They aren't rich people but he owned the house and again had never got round to putting it in joint names.

Good thing he made a will.  Or under the rules of "bona vacantia" a lovely lady would be out on the streets and HM Government would be able to flog their house to pay for bombs.

Sweet.

Bona vacantia would not have applied in her case. She would have had a registrable class F land charge on the property, effectively making it hers for life unless there were prior outstanding legal charges on the house, and quite possibly on application to the court a full legal title.

You'd be amazed at how little it takes to get a valid equitable interest in someone else's property :) Running a duster around the place once a year would probably do it.

Admittedly my law is a little rusty, my days at law school are so last century, but I cannot imagine that equity has become any less generous.

Meanwhile I have just started destroying the wasps' nests in the car port - got nine so far.

That was 9 nests under construction, then I found another 7 they had started. Persistent little beggars.   :o

I had to give the marching orders to a nest of hornets a few years ago. A good insect repellant and a vacumn to suck them up as they left. Hopefully the wasps will steer clear like last year.  8)

Oldboy

Out today photographing in the nice sunshine. Past a chap on his bike who stopped to wait for his son, who was pushing his bike up the slope of the motorway bridge. This bridge is wide enough for six people to walk across abreast. As I descended the other side, walking by the edge looking for butterflies or other insects on the flowers, heard a child's voice saying, "bleep-bleep". The next thing I knew was this kid on his bike smashed into my back, sending me flying and crashing into the side of the concrete path and ground where the flowers where. As the bike was only half the adult size, it caught me in the back of my knees which forced them forward thereby, stopping me from taking a step forward to regain my balance. Me, the camera and lens hit the deck hard resulting in cuts on both shins and a small cut on my hand. Luckily, the camera and lens survived besides a few scruff marks and the lens hood was at a angle, but also wasn't broken. Went home and put plasters on all my cuts, but my right shin is still very sore.  :'(

My point is, don't parents show their children how to use brakes on cycles any more!

The father was very sorry and the child was crying his heart out. A woman ran over to help me, but I said I was OK after checking the camera and lens. This is the second time a youngster has ridden their bike into me, but on the last occasion I had my big pack on with my 400mm F2.8 in, and she just bounced off me and I didn't feel a thing. On both occasions I was on the edge of the paths with plenty of room to pass by safely.  :(

Cripes OB, you weren't a motorcyclist in a previous life were you? I was, and find that I sometimes still inadvertently wear the cloak of invisibility that was part and parcel of that means of transport, even when I'm in a car. I was once on a double decker bus at Hyde Park Corner when a car ran into the side of it. The driver got out and said 'sorry mate, didn't see you there' - everyone on the bus fell about laughing.

As cycling becomes more popular there are more and more 'accidents' involving pedestrians being hit by cyclists, even some deaths. About time cyclists had to have compulsory 3rd party insurance.

Hope you are not to bruised OB.

I agree with H, re 3rd party insurance. I think in someways parents should be responsible enough to ensure their children are protected by some level in insurance cover for the sake of all concerned when unfortunate situations occurr. And I bet the youth would act more responsibly on the street when their parents are watching TV

Howard. Why do you put the word accidents in inverted commas? If I were a less generous person I would deduce that you were infering that they were'nt accidents at all.
I ride a bike, I drive a car, I have third party insurance up to £10,000,000  on my bike. Is that going to help me when I'm wiped out by a SMIDSY ( Sorry Mate I Didn't See You.)
There was an inccident recently were a cyclist ran into a pedestrian and she was killed (This may be the case to which you refer.) If it is, I sugest you look into the details a little more carefully and see if alcohol on the pedestrians part was involved.
In the the case of Oldboys very unfortunate incident ( Hope your OK Oldboy.) even if insurance for cyclists were compulsory do you really think that the child on the bike would have been coverd. Perhaps the child should be sued for not being on the road where they belonged.
                       As ever.  Graham.

Thanks all.

No bruises, just cuts and a very sore shin. It's a good job I was well wrapped up with my arms covered.  ::)

Graham I put accidents in inverted commas because in OB's case it obviously wasn't an accident. As, I'm sure are many other incidents. For something to be an accident it has to be ideally unavoidable, or more laxly at least inadvertent and not the result of reckless behaviour.

I ride a bicycle too, most days when it's not peeing down, but just because most cyclists are responsible doesn't mean that lots aren't. There are an awful lot of mostly younger cyclists who are absolutely certain that the rules of the road are definitely not applicable to them.  And that the word pedestrian includes bicycle riders.

I read recently that the majority of cycling fatalities were when the riders were crushed by longer vehicles turning left. So the majority of them would have been neatly and deliberately tucked into the blind spot of a lorry or bus. Vehicles which have rear wheels tracking a wider arc than the front ones. Those aren't accidents either - they're natural selection at work. The fact is that on a pushbike you are both vulnerable and hard to see, and if you ride one without that firmly in mind trouble awaits. It's a bit like in sailing where the rule is 'power gives way to sail'. Anyone who is stupid enough to sail a yacht on that basis and not get well out of the way of larger powered vessels is an idiot. As my father used to say, there is no point being dead right, that is asserting your rights and being dead because of it.

A number of years ago a friend of mine had her arm broken by a cyclist who hit her while she was walking on a pavement. So when I  see a bike on a pavement I have to resist the urge to push the beggars off their machines as they pass. So far I've managed it  :)

And the child who hit OB was the responsibility of the accompanying adult - so throw the dad in jail and the key in the canal ;)

And now I come to think of it insurance alone is not enough. High vis jackets with the individual cyclist's registration number in large characters front and back seems more like it . . . obviously I'd be exempt because I ride everso nicely.

Later - Graham - I can't find one about a drunk victim - there is one about a guy packing his car to go on holiday, and one about an OAP hit by a cyclist jumping a red light. A whole 7 months in jail in total for two deaths. Doesn't seem right somehow.

Glad you were not hurt too badly Oldboy and your gear was not damaged!
Must admit it`d the cyclists on footpaths that get me. Got mown down as I walked into a tiling shop  - on the pavement- and must admit was glad the cyclist came off worst in that situation as he was pretty obnoxious and did not see the harm at hurtling at speed down a pavement. He was "trying to avoiud injury on the potholed adjacent busy road".
The other side of it -a cyclist hit a patch of ice at the top of a winding hill as my wife was driving us up it a while back. he came hurtling into our windscreen causing a lot of damage. He picked himself up, assured us he was OK but made sure my wife knew immediately tha he was fully responsible for it, had full insurance and would be covering any damage done apologising for the distress caused. Out of his hands really with the ice patch he hit but nice bloke and shows there are all sorts about on bikes, as with drivers etc. As for Leeds taxi drivers - don`t get me started  :legit:

The "Mac's just work" bunk. Had two issues back to back today. Despite installing the latest software my Blackberry won't cooperate with the Mac. When I try to do anything it locks up and I need to 'force quit' to get out of it. Just to make sure there's no issue with the Blackberry I installed the software on a Win7 machine and everything works as advertised.

Been having issues with trying to print documents (not photos) from my Mac to a networked printer that is installed on my Win7 machine. Fella on a tech site suggested I hook the printer up directly with the Mac to eliminate any network issues. The Mac won't even recognize the printer which is a fairly common  HP. Again it works fine on the Win7.

How old is your printer? Though in fairness, Mac's don't really care that much...
Find it odd that you can't plug your printer into the Mac without it being instantly recognised :-\

On another Mac related issue - ordered some memory to take my Mac to its supposed maximum - but the memory doesn't fit! Entered the Mac details and the system said this is the stuff and here we go.

Well it's not the stuff and it's going back in the morning... After i've been to the dentist  :uglystupid2:

It was my first photo oriented Printer, so I think it's a 2006 vintage. That's when I got into digital. I thought if Win7 had drivers for it Mac would. What's really got me miffed now is finding out HP doesn't supply drivers anymore, the web site says to use Windows update for drivers for their printers.

Grinding your teeth in frustration are you? That's a feeling I'm getting all too familiar with. >:(
