I also got the 100-400f4.5-5.6 LIS Mk2 for my birthday this year - I got it at the photoshow in Birmingham. Twas a bargin @ £300 off list.

And worth every penny in my book - does everything I want it to do and does it very well!

Nice present

Was chatting to photographer at RAF Coningsby a few days ago. He had just splashed out on a 5D MK111 and the 100-400L MK11. He offered to let me try it out on my 7D MK11. Happy to say no more aircraft presented themselves for a photo, so I didn't take him up on the offer. Probably saved me £2000. Still I'm quite happy with the old trombone technology of the MK1.

The MK1 does all you need, the MKII and MKIII just add bells and whistles. 

The Mk1 is absolutely fine if it works for you - I have never liked the trombone style - others love it as it is quick to zoom. And to be fair, going from 100 to 400mm does take a little practice as to where to hold the lens body on the Mk2.

What I really like is the speed of focus, the new IS system and ultimately the image quality.
