One of those, are you? Well, if you haven't really aged since your twenties, it's not surprising that I think you're not as old as your name.

Also I must agree with you regarding age, I will shortly be receiving a new camera which is probably one of the most complex of all DSLRs, I'm reading up as much as I can on this camera, but unfortunately nothing is remaining in my head.
I'm much, much older than you, even Oldboy is still a youngster in comparison

Chaps. As long it's got some method of adjusting;

           a)  The aperture.
           b)  The shutter speed.
           c)  The sensor sensitivity.
    and d)  The focus of the lens.  You'll be fine. Everything else is just a complication of those four things.

What else do you need? Some time back I bought a Sony NEX7, purely because of it's portability. Six months after I bought it Sony sent me a questionnaire to see what I thought of it. It comprised a list of inbuilt functions that the camera had, asking me to rate them one to ten.

I wasn't aware that most of these functions were available!  In the 'recommendations/suggestions box' I asked that the next time they produce a camera just put in the four things that Graham lists, and let me buy it for 1/10th the price.

No reply from Sony to date.

Even I, the purely amateur housewife with a camera, do not use the built in possibilities of my camera.
I came across them once, and have experimented with some, but they give quite artificial/over the top images.

I stick to the aperture setting, with a rare - only twice so far - switch to shutter speed, and regularly remember to change ISO and aperture, and also regularly forget to change back. Had some spectacular failings, that I don't always spot in time, but, the more spectacular the failing, the more I will remember next time.

I also use the 'all singing, all dancing' setting when photographing 'on the hoof,' with no time to change settings.

After a very busy and draining period, I am slowly getting into the 'photographic mood' again. Fingers crossed, I haven't forgotten the wise lessons and failures!

Not quite as upmarket as the 1DX as most of my photography is aircraft and wildlife, so my camera will be the 7D mk11, which interestingly has a lot of the 1DX features.

Happy to say no more aircraft presented themselves for a photo, so I didn't take him up on the offer. Probably saved me £2000. Still I'm quite happy with the old trombone technology of the MK1.

I could indeed 'hear' the bells and whistles the minute I read the line, and I could see the wildlife run for their 'deer' lives.
My sense of humour is often very language based. I'm glad Graham understands me.

To be honest, I do not know the first thing about lenses. I know what a macro lens is/does (I want one in due time), and I have a super zoom on my camera, and that's all I know. The 'numbers' don't mean anything to me.
