Looking at you

I tried a B&W version. I have used a fill in layer for the background and had a bit of a problem with the beard. Does it look alright on the left hand side? I would like to enter it in my camera club competition if it looks ok.
Thankyou

Yes, you can see it's a bit soft on the left-hand side. Confused

This works really well in black and white Sandy. There is some softness on the left side. If you can bear it, I would have another go just to get that bit right for the comp. I think it could do very well.

Looks great in B+W Sandy. Fine detail like the beard is always a problem. You could try just a little dodging in that area, and using the dodge tool just a little sparkle in the whites of the eyes.

Thanks very much for the suggestions I will have another go

Would selective sharpening on the beard help? Other than that I think it's a great image. Almost reminds me of Vermeer.

Great shot Sandy and I reckon it would be a great shot for a cc competion

with the dark background, but for the overjacket, it has quite a 19c Julia Margaret Cameron feel - agree though it just needs a bit more work to emphasise the beard etc.
