Comments on Nikon lenses that you own?
« on: December 04, 2007, 09:08:16 AM »
I have ;
Kit 18-55 - I quite like this lens despite the reviews I have read. Had some great results from it especially indoors

50mm f1.4 - Sharp and fast. Used it for portraits and landscapes. I won 250 notes in a comp this year with a long exposure night shot using this lens so its my fav at the moment

70-300 vr. - The first couple of months I hated this one. I suffered a lot of sensor dust after each use of this one. It seemed to act like a dyson. At first I thought it was me changing the lens outdoors. Not so sure now, may have been manufacturing debris?? I dont get no dust now.

I also have the Nikon 70-300mm and had the dyson effect too, I'm now using it on my D300 and no dust problems. The lens is quite soft at 300mm and I would advise 200mm as a very good setting, over all its good value for the money.

I have the Nikon 200mm Micro lens, £1000 odd quid so you would expect quality and you get it, this is a fantastic macro lens for bug shooting as you can stay quite a bit further away than the other 60mm Micro lens that I have, excellent lens.

I have the Nikon 60mm Micro, again a very good macro lens that produces very nice images, no complaints at all. The short 60mm means you are much closer to the subject so watch out for your shadow blocking the subject.

Hi, "Guest" long time no see, how are you

Is yours the VR version as well ?
I love this lens now. More so than when I first posted about it.

I've also got the 70-300mm vr and have not had any problems re the dust. Use it all the time at my son's rugby games. I've also got the 50mm 1.8. Fantastic lens for the price. Also use the 105mm f2.8 macro lens. Slightly off topic, I use the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 as my 'kit lens'.

You guys obviously have lots of spare cash.

I have: -

50mm f1.8D - absolute bargain lens for anyone with a Nikon
85mm f1.8D - another great lens
18-200mm f3.5-5.6G ED[/b] - good general purpose lens
70-300 f4.5-5.6G ED - I am amazed at how good the quality of images produced by this lens is, especially at the price I got this one at, and no noticeable dust problems with mine, fortunately

and

24-70 f2.8G ED - cost me an arm and a leg (with help from Australian Government, who gave $900.00 to just about everybody in Australia who earned less than $80k/yr to help stimulate the economy).  Very nice lens.

I'm slowly getting myself to the point where i can switch over to FX camera without having to worry about DX crop factors.  Would really like the 14-24mm, but about $2700.00 here in Oz.  Oh well, keep on saving.

Cheers, Andrew.

The 14-24mm F2.8 is a cracking lens and well worth the money.  ;D

OB did you do bank jobs in your younger years?
You have more kit than Jessops.
Fancy parting with a bit of it?

No, but used to work for them!  :2funny:

This lens is still in short supply, as Jacobs didn't have any and Jessops just the one, which came in stock three hours before I brought it.  ;D

Nikon 50mm 1.8 - sharpest lens I have ever owned. Brilliant for the money
35mm 1.8 - very sharp and compact.
85mm 1.8 - very sharp also. Very compact, and wonderful narrow DOF
18-70 - one of my favourite ever lenses. Really versatile, and everything I've had published has been taken with this. Very sharp.
18-55 VR - quite sharp, and amazing VR (down to 1/3 sec!)
100mm 2.8 Series E - an old 1980s lens, about the same size as the 50mm. Great for street shots
35mm 2.5 Series E - got this for the Nikon FE. Nice and sharp.

The Series E lenses were mocked when they first came out because of the use of plastic. Imagine such as thing - making camera and lens bodies from plastic! They're now highly rated, and are a bargain on ebay

Bought a 135mm 3.5 AI the other day on ebay, and am currently trying it out. Very compact for the focal length.

Got anything nice you can show me with the 35 / 1.8?  The cool kids say it rocks on a D3 (I know it's not supposed to).

Siggy 30 / 1.4 vignettes too much for my taste in full frame though it's nice in 5:4.  For some reason I don't love the 50 on the D3 and am thinking of a wider prime.

On the other hand I never really got into my 85 on crop but it's jolly nice on full frame.

But the 24-70 is where the action's at.  Mine's been needing cosmetic repair for 6 months or more but I won't chance it because I'd have to be without it for a week.
It's Guest's round

Hi Jonathan

Great to hear from you.

Here's someone who uses the 35mm 1.8 on fullframe (FX):
