What lens can you not live without, and why?
« on: December 01, 2007, 09:40:51 PM »
For me, it's the Tamron 70-300mm macro. I've a Sigma 105mm macro, but due to the requirement to get close to nervy subjects, sometimes the Tammy's 1:2 macro is more useful. In addition, I use the macro for portraits, the Tammy gives it a good go though. For wildlife, I've recently acquired a Tamron 200-500mm, but for carrying around places like zoos, the 70-300mm can be more flexible.

So, which of your collection can you not live without (and no, the canon 18-55 efs kit lens as doorstop doesn't count!)

This is an easy one for me. My beloved Oly Zuiko 11-22mm. Its as sharp as you could ever want, prob way beyond any sensor around today. Wide enough, although not as wide as some, fast (f2.8-3.5) and whats more, it just about reaches 'standard' fov at the narrow end.

Its on me cam 75% of the time and I own 5 lenses. Not cheap although there are some deals about.

For me it has to be my Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro.  Followed closely by my Sigma Bigma.   These are the only half decent lenses I own at the moment.  :(

For me same as Lurkie. The Tamron 90mm Macro is on when the Bigma is off. I also like the 30mm Sigma f1.4, but use that for parties only.

S'funny but if I had to answer this without thinking I'd say 70 - 200 VR OR 30/1.4.  Both are pretty specialised lenses and do what they do incredibly well.  Both have got me shots that I simply wouldn't have got with another lens.

However, I looked this up recently.  Over about 8K pics that I've sold by far my most used lens is the cheapie Sigma 18 - 50 / 2.8.  It took maybe half the pics.  So probably that one.  Which is a bit of a worry because it won't work properly on my D3 - if it ever arrives.

It's got to be my Nikon 85mm 1.8 at the moment. It spends a huge amount of time attached to my camera, as the light is so low during winter.
Almost zero depth of field. Really small and light. Very sharp. Wide aperture.
And I'm able to take shots at 1/40th of a second hand held!

Hi everyone,  my most used lens is probably the tamron 17-50 2.8 but i'd like to think i use the sigma 70-200 2.8 just as much so I could justify the money spent on it. I'd think ideally I would use the 24-105 f4 is if I could afford it, it's a pity it's not f2.8. It is either that or a 40D. I find the 400D a very noisy camera.

I agree with Orgie I got the Sigma 17-70 a couple of weeks ago and it is a great lens and suits what I photograph.

My new addition of the siggy 10-20 4/3rds fit for the e3 is now firmly part of the bag, its now in company with the Zuiko 14-45. siggy 55-200. zuiko 35 macro, that will do me for a while..lol. have been using the 10-20 for the last two weeks non-stop, but still prefer my zuiko 14-45,  im more comfortable with it.
