I bought one of these 2nd hand a couple of years ago, made in the late 80's & one of the first EF lenses it has a push pull type zoom, constant f4 & metal mount. I love it (I may be easily pleased or have a good copy) especially the zoom action, great for portraits as well. I have used it with a Jessops 2x converter & it still performs well.

I think I remember reading that Sue  has the Nikon equivalent and she swears by it I had contemplated selling my 70-300 siggy  and getting one but I like the extra length

Surely nothing Nikon make can be compared to Canon's superior quality  ;).
I sold an 80 - 200 kit lens on Ebay & bought this with the proceeds so it was pretty much free & in my opinion a lot better lens.

I've just read Ken Rockwells review - he is such an arse! When he started on about copywriting of his correction numbers, I switched off!

Anyway, it does sound like you got a good buy!

Yes, I've got the Nikon 70-210mm f4/5.6 D - although I did put it on ebay [because it duplicates my 70-300mm] I was quite pleased when it did'nt quite make the reserve and decided to keep it for a bit longer. I'll add a seperate thread about it so as not to confuse matters with the Canon 8)
