A quandry - can you help?
« on: July 23, 2009, 05:55:52 PM »
Hi guys - A question which I think I know the answer to but would like your input
I am thinking of getting some close up filters from 7dayshop but don't quite know what size to get! I have three different size lenses - 52mmm thread on the 50mm f1.8 and the 100mm f2.8, 58mm on the 70-300mm and 67mm on the 18-70. I assume that it would be best getting 52mm to fit the two primes rather than for the zooms? would that be right? Over to you!
Irv

Yup
get the 52mm size if you need them.
I bought the same set from 7day a couple of years ago but was a little unhappy with the results. Only used them a couple of times and bought a second hand 50mm micro lens instead.

I have a set of 58mm & a stepping ring that allows me to use them on my 50mm prime which is 52mm. Dont know if you could step down from 67mm to 52mm but the step down ring was peanuts so if its possible you could buy 2.

Hi Irv,

I got a set of close up filters from 7dayshop and too be honest, I used them once and then decided to get the Kenkoo extension tubes as I wasn't happy with the results.

They were quite difficult to get a good sharp shot (but that might have just been me  :-\)

I thought the Kenkoo tubes were good for macro shots until I tried my father in laws Canon 60mm EF-S f/2.8 macro lens and for me the comparison is like night and day. The quality of shot is so much better - so much quicker and easier to get with the dedicated macro lens.

There is a considerable difference in cost though.

Agree with Steve, a macro lens is the better option.  ;D
As regards close-up filters, I've used with my Nikon 60mm F2.8 macro a plus 2 and a Plus 3 together and got some cracking shots both handheld and using a tripod. Need to have good light to get the best results.

Thanks for your advice guys  The general consensus is to save for a macro lens then. If that is so which would be the best all round focal length to get? I am using a D70 if that is relevant.

That depends on how much money you wish to spend!  >:(
I rate the Nikon 105mm F2.8 VR as the best and the one I use most often. In fact it's usually in my bag along with the Nikon's 70-200mm F2.8 VR and 14-24mm F2.8. At around £600 it might be a bit dear. You could pick either the Nikon 60mm F2.8 macro, but it extends when you move in close. Tamron Di 90 or Sigma 105 F2.8 macros are great lenses and get rave reviews from users on DCM's site. At between £320-400 may suit you better.
Just checked Mifsuds site and they have a secondhand 60mm F2.8 Nikon for £229 see http://www.mifsuds.com/usedpriceindex.htm and scroll down to Nikon AF.  ;D

I don't know if you can do it Irv, don't know anything about your banking system. My pay is direct deposit, but I divert $200 from every pay cheque into an account just for things like this. It's not a secret, my wife knows I have it, but it doesn't show up on the family accounts so she doesn't notice it gone. I've paid cash for all my equipment and it hasn't impacted our family money so my wife doesn't complain.
