Your Opinion
« on: May 08, 2016, 08:05:09 PM »
Looking for your opinion on this photo with the windmill out of focus.  The wife is not keen, she feels like she needs to put her reading glasses on.  I quite liked it when I first looked at it on the computer screen but the more I look the less certain I am.  It would be good to get your thoughts good or bad.

Thanks

Mike

Ok. Like the concept and idea - something often done in TV and the like, but being a dynamic medium they tend to pull the focus back to the background  -so the windmill in this case.

And it can work in stills. And almost does here. But I think the grass is too similar in colour to the background, so the only thing that is drawing the eye is that the foreground is in focus. Also there is too much "dead" space at the bottom. Rule of thirds should be thought about too - I think it would work here.

Now, the sky. What can you say. Flat. Boring.  Too much of it.

Whether you could have got even lower to put the grass in the sky, I'm not sure - or even sure it would have worked either

I don't get where your wife was going with the reading glasses crack. But I too, have taken a dozen similar shots, so I like the concept as well. I do agree though, you could probably cut the bottom off for a better perspective. I personally would go B&W at which point the sky, as is, would fit. IMHO.
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

I agree with a suggested crop, so that the grass ears are closer to the third.

While I rather like the soft pastel tones to the mystery mill beyond, I feel the depth of Shadow is too dark and hard in some places and accordingly grabs too much attention to distract from the dreamy air the image started to instill.

I would like to see the mill "more "out of focus.
The grasses would then stand out as the main feature especially with the suggested crop.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment.

I will take the suggestions on board and do some cropping and see what it is like in black and white, I might try it with a square crop.  This will have to wait until I get home at the weekend.

Totally agree with the flat boring sky, will hopefully get back over to Norfolk soon to try Cley windmill again with a better sky.

Many thanks.
