I've got version 9. I don't recall version 10 being worth the upgrade cost for me.

Question for you then.
I have a folder full of NEF files from my Nikon.
I edit some of these in DXO then export to disc (as jpegs to a folder i create and specify)
Others I just play about with but do not save or export.
When I go back to the original folder, there are some extra files with the LR logo (lightroom) and the suffix NEF.dop

I suspect these are the files I looked at and/or played with ?
I cant remember selecting this option or find where it is.
One would think the files if not saved would just remain as NEF files

If I understand Lightroom correctly, if you "play with" any file, Lightroom will remember what you did. It stores that data in its catalog file, but there is an option to store it instead (or as well as) in an individual "sidecar file" for each image. I assume those are what you are seeing. I don't think your original files will be altered at all.

Simon
I am referring to the files I look at and play with without exporting and  saving in DXO Pro.

I know there is an option to export to LR

Alf, DXO uses side car files like Lightroom, so if you go back to them in DXO it should reload the last edit state from the sidecar file, which has a .dop extension.

I understand that bit but, the dop files are showing as LRnef.dop with the lightroom logo on the tile despite not being opened or saved as or in lightroom (if that makes sense)

.dop files are the sidecar files in DxO as well as Lightroom - Windows presumably sticks with what it knows as the icon. There's some information here:

http://forum.dxo.com/index.php?topic=6837.0

I haven't tried to turn it off as I usually only use DxO on files in a work directory rather than where the raw files are normally stored, by I can confirm that opening a raw file in DxO will cause a dop file to be created in the same directory. If you don't want to keep the edits, you can always delete them. Or edit the preferences to prevent creation in the first place.

The .dop extension is recognised by Windows as a file to be opened by LR and as such it gives you the logo of LR in explorer. You will have to set the file association of the .dop file to DXO pro.
Goto control panel - default programs - associate a file type or protocol with a specific program.
The route to this might be slightly different depending on what windows you run.

You beat me to it, Stephen and now I think I might be wrong as well. Since it is a sidecar file it might not be recognised by windows at all.

I just clicked on one of my .dop files and it opened DxO (10, in my case) so it's going with whatever program associated itself with that file type. I have windows explorer set to show directories in detail view, so I don't see the icons normally, but on changing my view it shows a DxO icon.
