CHAT Thread weekly competition 24 January-1 February 2015.

ENTRIES thread here

Incongruous.

Something that does not seem to be in the right place, somehow. Something that stands out. In all ways you can think of: from the medieval inn, surrounded by sixties office blocks, the differently coloured flower in a bouquet, the car on the beach  engulfed by the incoming tide, the cat among the pigeons ... You get my drift. I hope.

It has been done before (the 'Odd one Out'), but I hope to get some really different photographs, not the 'usual' brown egg between the whites, or the fork surrounded by spoons. My earlier example of the differently coloured flower was possibly not ideal. The drowning car is more the sort of image I hope for. But it is up to you.

It may exist somewhere, you may know just the sort of thing in your neighbourhood, you may come across it by accident, or you can create it. A 'set up' composition on your kitchen table, or your studio. A digitally created image using the copy and paste possibilities; any way you can think of.
If it is going to be digitally created, all elements of the image must be photographed within the time limits of the competition.

It does not have to be a 'natural' image: an 'elephant in a porcelain store' kind of thing would be lovely!

I hope we will end up with a good range of beautiful, weird and/or wacky photographs. Surrealism, conceptual photography, or an illustration of the incongruous things that are around us, if we can but 'see' them.

Pictures to be taken between now (Saturday 24th January 2015) and Sun 1st February 2015.

Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59pm Monday 2nd February 2015.
Poll will be up Tuesday 3rd February 2015.
Winner to be announced Saturday February 7th 2015.

The Rules for the weekly competition are...

Create a chat thread
Create a poll for that weeks comp and declare the winner on the Saturday

I think you mean a bull in a china shop!  ::)

That's the one! Using Dutch expressions again.

I got the idea for this brief in Sheffield, where there is a medieval pub, surrounded by industrial buildings and car parks.
Took a stroll downtown yesterday, and, as usual, kept my eyes open for an opportunity, and realised there wasn't much incongruity around.
Maybe I've bitten off more than I can chew, as a trip to Sheffield isn't on the cards.

Hope others have more luck, or better eyesight, to spot something worthwhile.

I may have to rely on a copy and paste job, maybe doing something slightly, or wholly, surreal.

This is the first chance I have had to look into this theme and dare I say it's right up my street. I love the work of Magritte and some of his style would work well here.

I'm feeling poorly with a chest infection but hope to produce something before I fly off to sunnier climes next Saturday.

I was beginning to think I had 'over thought' the theme, as it is now an 'anything goes.' Glad you like it. Magritte would indeed fit the bill very well.

So, you're off again, and you've only just returned!

At least it feels like that, as I am still caught up in my renovation; haven't thought of anything but furniture, flooring, kitchens etc for months. And the only photos I took were of furniture, flooring and kitchens!

However, today I went to the local Common, with the specific idea to find something for this competition. First time I've done that for ages, normally I find something, while I am out with the camera anyway.

It was 1st week in December when I was away. We do love our holidays. Its our little luxury.

I really don't know what came over me when I was setting the brief. It started out as just 'Incongruous,' but grew and grew, as I was writing it. And now it is just a mess, an 'anything goes.'

It's probably because I have 'furniture on the brain,' and haven't really done anything photographical for weeks, if not months.

I did go out to see what there was that fitted the brief, and I wasn't very lucky.

There was this:

which was a quick snapshot and not very good.

And this:

which is spot on, but not very exciting.

I ended up creating this:

which at least gives you something to wonder at, my bad cutting skills for instance.

How do you judge diverse entries like this? Can you?

Haha, I see what you mean however, the theme is set. Judging will be fun

I am quite looking forward to see what people have cooked up, but how to decide which one is better than the other, I haven't a clue.
But then again, they may all be 'normal' photographs. Maybe I'll go for the one that 'speaks' to me.

I may struggle to enter and I'm gutted. Can't go out far in this cold weather as I have bronchitis and  unless I can set something up at home by Friday night, no entry from me.

Sorry to hear that Chris - wrap up warm.

I've got a plan. We shall see if it works or not.
