Gear acquisition syndrome strikes again...
« on: November 22, 2014, 03:12:59 PM »
So, those who know me will know I'm a Nikon fan. I'm currently using a D700 and have no plans to change whatsoever - its perfect for me and will remain so as my skills improve.

However, i was passing my local LCE today and they'd got a Fuji S5 pro used at a price I couldn't resist. As I'm sitting here waiting for the battery to charge, can anyone offer any tips to help me get the best out of my new toy so that the financial controller doesn't dismiss it as a pointless plaything?

Thanks

Paul

A camera that will be used, even if only as a point and shoot, is never point less.  :)

I have a S5 pro
Gives some cracking colours and tones especially for portraits etc.
You will know its a D200 body with a better sensor etc so easy to find your way around it

Thanks for the comments  - very happy with it so far. :)
Just need to work out how to get the best from it.
Alfonso - as an owner do you shoot raw or jpeg? I shoot raw on my D700, but a quick look at the owners groups suggests there's less point on the S5 due to the enhanced dynamic range...

Hi mate
I shot raw with all my cams.
I was coached on its use by a former DCM member whom you will know (don " tiff " tiffney). He used to get some great images from the S5.
I leave the in cam shooting modes at standard and the DR set at auto.
I also use evaluative metering ( it’s called 3D Matrix on the S5)

Have a look here, not all of it
http://www.kenrockwell.com/fuji/s5/dynamic-range.htm
Just scroll down  over the two way over exposed images the top one is the S5 the lower one the D200 & just run your mouse over them & it shows you how they looked after adjusting in Photoshop............the S5 has captured a lot more recoverable detail from the highlights & these are both taken at the cameras default settings,  the camera’s sensor type is better at doing this in the S5

Hello - my name's Paul and I'm a camera addict.
Wow - thats quite a difference in what's recoverable. I'm very impressed...
I'll stick with RAW then - was a bit concerned as the fuji software no  longer appears to be mac compatible, but elements and dxo appear able to cope.
I'll let you all know how I get on.
Cheers

Amazon have their black Friday sales all this week. They have a Canon 7D for £699 instead of £1699.99.  :o

Just had a look in my piggy bank. I'll be giving that one a miss then . . .
