Don't get excited, not Nature in the Buff but the results of British Wildlife Awards.

They interviewed the winner yesterday morning on BBC breakfast.
I love the overgrown telephone box shot and the Otter with the Puffin.

Moving things are out of the question for me (to photograph that is), but the phone box is just my kind of thing! Love it.

Lovely set of a images and i also like the otter/puffin shot. How do you find out about these competitions? I feel ready to give them a go.

There are two areas where competitive photography can be entered.

Competitions that offer prizes, usually sponsored by an organisation or magazine, E.g. The Royal Horticultural Society or in this instance a British Wildlife magazine.

Or entry into an exhibition or Salon usually run by a photographic club or national organisation e.g. the RPS, The Cotswold Monochrome Salon, The London Salon, Southampton International, The Edinburgh International, the list is endless.

Some are more prestigious than others and can attract 1000's of entries.

Sandy is a regular entrant in these types of Exhibitions/Competitions and meets with a good deal of success with her entries.

So if you feel confident and want to have a go, dive in. I found this with just a little Google, could be a starting point for you.

Be sure to let us all know how you get on, whether successful or not.

Doesn't time fly!! It's that time of year already, a bit like putting the bins out, it rolls around with remarkable rapidity; there must be a link with age and the sensation, the older you get the quicker it rolls around.

Any way I digress, speaking about competitions, the annual Taylor Wessing short list is announced.

There is a rumour going the rounds that Specsavers are seriously considering sponsorship of the event next year!

all those on the shortlist are professional photographers.

Hmm, there is hope for us all.

I must be missing something here. IMHO none of these shots make me want to look again.  ???

Alf, we're all professional photographers (if we want to be). You can call yourself a professional with no proof of the fact!

I made that statement too Abers when I got that grief with my one serious venture into competition with my snow scenes in the DCW Photographer of the Year comp. A troll had a go at most of the people shortlisted for in his eyes breaking one rule or another. he accused me of being a professional -  there wasn`t actually a bar on professionals. As my photography income then was less than 1/10th of my pension I told him not to worry about me being a professional and we could all call ourselves that. he said I stated it on my website to which I replied anyone setting themselves up to register and do some wedding photography would look a bit useless if they called themselves unprofessional. Once I finish with weddings and the like next March I aim to shoot for me a bit more and maybe do some entries. Might even be able to enter Countryfile comp. Repeated requests for them to define what they constitute to deem someone "a professional" have met with a lack of response. I generally hold that if you make more than 50% of your living out of your photography you area  professional and see some comps say the same - doesn`t mean you are a better photographer though, just that you earn some money. Under that definition I have never been a professional - even if my website says I am  ;)

Just looking at the TW prize shots they are guff in my eyes. Symptomatic of what I see in lots of "contemprorary " wedding photography styles just now with faded colours, washed out black and white and no soul.
