Genuine or dangerous?
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:16:52 PM »
I received an email from either Microsoft or MSN, telling me about a change of terms and conditions for users of their services. Three services were singled out, and sadly I cannot remember which ones, but their 'cloud' thingy was one of them.

It had two buttons at the bottom of the mail, where you could click to read the new terms and conditions. I wasn't bothered and deleted the mail.

Found it a bit strange though, especially as it was sent to one of my Gmail addresses, and not my Hotmail address.

I have several gmail and hotmail addresses, and a BTinternet address and none of them has received it (yet?)

In the BT address spamfolder were quite a number of emails addressed with the full name of the holder, and all about corrupted files/emails and damaged images that were supposedly retrieved. All totally new to me. (Haven't opened them of course.)

Does anyone know anything about any of these? Especially the MSN one looked genuine, and only the fact that I hate reading pages of terms and conditions, stopped me from clicking on the link.

As this is about the time the FBI/Europol and the National Crime Agency expect the cyber criminals to reactivate the 'Game over Zeus' attacks, I was just wondering if this could be part of it.

Am I over cautious?

Any ideas/suggestions?

I had the same email. I deleted it staright away. Maybe we are being over cautious, but I'd rather that than get caught out. When I get around to it I will check their website.
I get emails from Paypal too. I know for a fact that some of these are phishing emails. I always delete them and check the website in my own time.
I think you are wise to be cautious.

You where correct to delete these emails. When you click on a button, it runs an on-click event which runs some code which you can't see, so anything can happen. This is how hackers get control of your computer so, it's best to delete it if unsure. You can always go to Microsoft's website to see if they sent you the email and what you might need to do.

And if you bother to report the fake paypal emails to them they just reply saying something along the lines of 'we didn't send it, so it's not our problem'. Useless jobsworths.

The fact that so few people received it, is, in my opinion, proof it is fishy.

I finally got a more detailed response from Microsoft, after first receiving a standard-type reply, that did not address the issues I raised.
The email was genuine after all, but I was not the only one who was suspicious, as you can see here (link supplied by Microsoft):
