One for the wildlifers.

Great how you can use an image that 99% of photographers would have discarded because a damn calf walked though the frame just as the shutter was pressed. The art is to justify it by a load of bull dung afterwards.

Did you get anything like this Jinky, or have you already binned them!

Isn't it true that a lot of art is pretentious bull sh*t! The more you can pile on the greater it becomes! Perhaps it was blind art critics that voted for it?  :uglystupid2:

Is it me or is the white balance a bit on the blue side? :legit:

Quite like the picture, but I would prefer to be left to make my own judgments. What the photographer thinks of their picture is of no significance to me,  when they try to influence my thoughts I'm afraid most of the impact is lost.

I agree with above - too blue and aspects of composition lacking / confusing. My elephant shots are all a bit too normal to have got anywhere in this comp. I`ll upload  a few later when I think on.

I like it.

The slow shutter / flash gives it a sense of movement.  I also like how the calf takes up most of the frame with the adults smaller in the background, playing with the sense of scale.  I also like how his feet are planted and the bottom so it looks like he is standing on the edge of the frame.  The blue hue gives it an otherworldly feel.

My only major criticism is that my eye is drawn to the water trail on the calf's hind leg.

I think this would look cool blown up and on the wall of somewhere dark like a nightclub.

Sure, the photographer was being a little pretentious, but no overly so; he was just trying to capture an energetic shot of elephants feeding.  Even if you don't like the picture, don't you think it is more interesting than the alternative had the calf not been passing?

A total piece of rubbish that IMO any photographer would delete instantly. I think my poor effort taken on the Tsarvo with my old 300D + Bigma which was in two pieces at the time is far better.

I would love to be that close to the elephant but I must say, it looks like it was an accidental shot...pressed the shutter in error....

Well I don't know much about photography, but I know what I like, and this is very definitely not it.

Tells you a lot more about the judges than anything else IMHO.

I wouldn't want to be that close to an elephant because they are A) dangerous and B) smell almost, but not quite, as bad a camels.

Been on a sarfari and taken children to the zoo. You don't have to sniff them, just being in the same county is usually close enough to shred your olfactory receptors  :knuppel2:

The only thing worse than the attitude of African wildlife is the stench  ::)

My sense of smell must be more lacking than I thought - never bothered me. As for getting close - it`s magical getting so near .. and nearer

I've been on quite a few safaris in Kenya and have never uncounted a particularly bad smell, apart from the many rubbish dump frequented by such as the malibou storks.
As for getting close to an African elephant I would suggest it's not a very good idea, having said that here's a photo of a couple of wild rhinos, taken from just a few feet distance.

We were told in South Africa that rhinos were the most dangerous animal and to keep clear.

Used this shot for a new mousemat. Doesn`t work - I forgot elephants are afraid of mice   ;)
