What are your thoughts on Adobes CC
« on: May 09, 2013, 02:16:56 PM »
Adobe have now moved the goal posts, as you will now only be allowed to rent their photographic software. Also anyone considering an upgrade to CS6 will have an hard time doing so, at it would appear to have been taken off the market.

On the bright side this will save me money as there's no way I will play their game.

This will bite them, not badly because professionals really have no choice, but amateurs will not play in the numbers that they currently do. I have Lightroom because they reduced the price by 2/3rds, but if I have to lose it at some point, so be it. If the rent on it is more than $7 a month it simply won't be worth keeping.

Usually when I "Upgrade" either Photoshop or Lightroom, it's because my shiny new camera isn't supported by my old version.
I suppose I'll just have to find something else to spend what money I have on....lenses for example. :)

My Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 moved without problems from Windows XP to Windows 7. It is absolutely essential to me, and (now owned by Adobe) at todays prices it is practically impossible to replace.

I note that the "XP Compatibility mode" in Windows 7 is not available in Windows 8. I have not found any indication that Dreamweaver is running in this mode. However, I also note that an upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 cannot be reversed. So when/if I decide I upgrade to Windows 8 I first need to be 100% certain my 2004 Dreamweaver will run on Windows 8.

If I ever get the opportunity I might borrow a Windows 8 machine to test it on. Otherwise Adobe's policy will prevent me ever moving from Windows 7.

Someone has tested the install: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4833979 but they do not say if it runs.

Yes, thanks for that link. The first post says "tried to install" and the following words all imply that it failed to install. I suppose it's what I expected but certainly not good news.

I'm just going to make do with what I have.  I bought Lightroom, CS4 and PSE on disk, so hope that I will be able to continue to use them - even if they are a bit out of date.  No way am I paying to rent the software, it might be good but IMHO it's just not worth the money.  I've been doing more analogue recently, so I might just do even more in the future!

I`ll be making do too. Got CS 6 and Lightroom 3 + others. Plenty. I guess the issues come when you change cameras when using raw.

Just went to Adobe and had a look at the 'Creative Accounting Cloud' charges. Photoshop is £210.96 per annum. That's about £100 more than I would be prepared to pay for a use it as long as I like licence. Lightroom is only available as part of the CAC™ rip off at £562.56 per annum. That's more than 7 times what I actually paid for a licence. Adobe must be insane.

Time to reinstall Aftershot Pro.

I guess it was inevitable with the pirating but most people I see on facebook etc have stated "That`s it!"

Ah, piracy. The head of HBO recently admitted that piracy, if anything, increases sales. It's simple really - most 'pirates' (what a ridiculous moniker - there are no ships or physical goods involved) would not buy the stuff they download, so there is actually no loss for the copyright holders at all; quite the reverse, it amounts to free advertising in many cases.

It's not a zero sum game - the downloaders and crackers get something for nothing, but the copyright holders don't lose anything. They win too. Adobe's reaction to the problem shows that they have fundamentally misunderstood the reality. Not to mention their amateur photographer users, who I suspect vastly outnumber their professional users and who now will buy nothing from them. They had a de facto monopoly, but they've decided to blow it for a potential short term gain. Morons.

Bet they start six month free service and then snooker on the Save options, unless you pay the drip feed  ::) - And if your PC ever locks you out from opening an image file on your hard drive, no problem  :2funny: You can retrieve a copy from a big cloud for a fee   :uglystupid2:  :legit:

Adobe, free. Humm. Not sure those two words have ever been compatible, not even for six seconds, let alone six months.

Adobe Reader is free  ;)

I was just guessing the expected business model a few service providers follow. New App New gadget fever never took hold in our house thank heavens.

Point taken. Flash is free too.

I just hope that Adobe catch such a serious cold from this that the idea of consumer software rental disappears into the cold dark place it deserves, never to return.
