My first HDR ever
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:44:41 PM »
My camera club is doing a workshop on HDR.  We had an outing this past weekend.  This is my first effort.

Looks good to me, nice and bright but not too "cartoony".

I dislike the cartoony look of a lot of HDRs.  To me the purpose is to even out the photo so that everything is properly exposed, not to turn it into something else.

This photo was taken at what is now called the "Distillery District".  It has been a distillery since the 19th century.   At one time Gooderham and Worts was the largest distillery in the Empire.

its very hard to know that was HDR - which is either good or bad, depending on your view.

For me whether to push an hdr a little depends on the subject and what you are trying to convey. For this one  I might have just moved those sliders up a bit as the lack of shadow and tone just flattens it a little for me.

I agree with Paul, it's lacking a bit in contrast. I'm a member of THIS Flickr group, but don't add to it much.

I use HDR and pseudo HDR a lot, especially on black and white conversions. The key for me, as you have remarked Don, is that it should be subtle and although it can add drama to an image it is important not to overdo it.
