Is this fair?
« on: December 18, 2012, 05:48:01 PM »
Where will it end?

The photo sharing service Instagram has asserted its right to sell its users' photos.

In an update to its terms of service, the Facebook-owned site claimed the right to resell images posted to its servers.

Unless users delete their accounts by January, they will not be able to opt out of the policy.

Under the new terms, Instagram would be able to:
•Share information about its users with Facebook, advertisers and other companies
•Use your photos and likeness for advertisements without your knowledge - including underage users
•Use your photos for ads which are not labelled ads

The company claimed that "nothing has changed about your photos' ownership or who can see them".

It also argued the new terms would "help protect you, and prevent spam and abuse as we grow".

But the changes were still met with an immediate outcry online, with many users claiming they would delete their accounts in protest.

The relevant passage of Instagram's terms of service reads:

"Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.
"If you are under the age of eighteen (18), or under any other applicable age of majority, you represent that at least one of your parents or legal guardians has also agreed to this provision (and the use of your name, likeness, username, and/or photos (along with any associated metadata)) on your behalf."

Users who wish to delete their accounts should first download any photos hosted at the service.   >:( >:( :(

No it is not Fair. It is deplorable! - To think that they can act like that - changing the rules after folk have placed a certain trust in the original conditions when they uploaded their images.

I can understand the wish to make money - but from property that belongs to others? - That proposal will be theft and there is no other word for it!

If they change their Rules, it should only apply to images that are uploaded after the Terms and Conditions change!; and not those uploaded prior to the event!

Thin edge of the wedge - I hope they get slapped hard for such a bully tactic  :knuppel2:

Smells rotten to me - I am glad I have not registered with them and now feel very concerned as I use Facebook - Good mind to empty all my Albums on Facebook just incase they riggle in some '' illegal aspect as questionably legal" through their corporate prowess.

I can't get excited about it - with Facebook YOU are the product. I have one picture only of Facebook, and none on Instagram. But as a general rule I regard anything I post online as fair game, although, of course, I personally have nothing to worry about ;)

Well happy to say with Facebook's lack in clarity I have just reduced my content on my Facebook account and pleased to say I have never used Instagram.

Lots of people seem to think photos on line, are free to use by anyone.

I don't think it's fair what Instagram is doing; I would not upload photos, if I knew they could be used by anyone, for all sorts of reasons.
But, if Flickr were to go that way, I don't know what I would do, as I like the fact that my photos are out there, for friends an family and everybody else to see.

I don't trust Facebook, so I don't use it.

If I was trying to make money with my images, I would react very differently of course!
But I haven't reached that stage yet.

Is it only images posted up via instagram or any images posted?

Mind you I might just delete all my images regardless. Not that I think anyone would want them, but it's the principle.

Someone shared photo's from my Facebook page and if they have an integrated account I want to make sure it has not been placed on Instagram.

It looks like they didn't expect that reaction.  :uglystupid2:

It might have been to test the water before doing that with Facebook?  :-X

Well I will still not trust them enough to upload any more images.
