Side Challenge - Let's Edit!
« on: September 16, 2012, 08:31:32 AM »
Following on from Chris's thought that my Forgotten Heart picture would benefit from being edited into a black and white picture, let's see what we can come up with

HERE is the link to the original RAW file - have some fun. 8)

(it's not especially sharp - I only have a cheap zoom lens  :legit:)

Later: DNG file compatible with 4.6 upwards (although I  know Photoplus won't open these).
JPG just in case neither of the RAW files work for you.

Had a look at the image posted on the forum and I have to say that it's almost a monochrome in its original form anyway, with perhaps just a tad of toning added.

The tonal range is somewhat compressed and any attempt to increase the contrast would just 'soot and whitewash' it. There is not much in the way of sidelighting to accentuate what texture there is so I think it would be best left in the form that it appears. Still it is heart-shaped as the brief demanded.

The processing on the shot I entered was Topaz Adjust for local contrast enhancement and more saturation, then a copy of that layer was run through Topaz Black and White Effects to add vignette and a tad of pale green toning, this top layer at 50% opacity and normal blend mode. and cropped a bit.

As Alan says the light was very diffuse, being in the shade of buildings and several trees, so there is nothing to naturally raise contrast in the wood grain and peeling paint. So it had to be colour, just with a slightly desaturated look and tint adjustment.

I have now posted links to DNG and JPG versions of the file just in case the original PEF is too recent for your version of ACR or other software - see the first post :)

No one has given it a go yet, to come up with an improved version?

Chris?

Familiar with the sight of old French painted shutters, and from the strength of light shown in the shot, I think I would probably end up with something very similar (not much time to play at the mo).

Well I have had a go, all of these processed in Lightroom with three variants. I prefer the colour ones to the B&W one.

The second one is my personal favourite.

A wee go over lunchtime

Are you going to run a poll Howard?

This could become popular although I would prefer a challenge of photographing a similar object like a fork or silver spoon to see different interpretations

Poll indeed! Nah, just a bit of fun.

Here's my best monochrome effort:

I think we have successfully demonstrated that the picture doesn't really lend itself to monochrome.
