i'm sure everyone got it, but just incase

Your retarded administrators don't understand that repairing damage is meaningless unless you first fix the problem. This forum is now 4chan's bitch, and we shall do with it as we please. Since your administrators are completely incompetent we have decided to ban them, as well as change their passwords; we're sure you won't mind. We went easy on you this first time, prepare for the worst.

I didn't get a email myself, unless it found its way into my spam filter,

but I have to say, it wasn't going to be any good just rolling the site back without fixing it, was it.

Looks like the software might be out of date by a few versions.  This makes me wonder if system 7 are still looking after the site maintenance, or have the DCM team taken it on themselves.

Sounds like a pretty serious warning if you ask me.

Edit:  I just recieved that email.  ::)

you know it is ever so slightly amusing, as they have really taken the pee out of users over there, never listened for ages, then came back with so ott admin and still not improving the site, more and more ad's etc  They seemed to forget that the users contributing to the site is what actually made it such a popular place and as such earned them their ad revenue..  having said all that I do also feel sorry for them and it is a little worrying that the hackers now have all our login details, passwords, email addresses etc, not good overall  :(

Sorry Orgie but I disagree. I cant feel one ounce of sympathy with the regime at dcm.
They have taken the leak out of the regs for too long and sold themselves to the ad machine, ignored members questions and requests and let the odd troll run free.
The Ant and Dick show has not worked, they have become complacent in the management of the site and they are now suffering from this neglect.
The user/member details, if comprimised, are down to the mods and admins.
We can, and should take this further if anyones security is breached

Well I know where your coming from for sure, the management team are too blame I guess, its like they never realised how lucky they were to be in the position they had with great users contributing, there's been a couple of staff members that have seemed to try, but my guess is they were cut short by their management. But taking on what you've said, I suppose its the users that get enjoyment from the site that I feel sorry for more so than the management team and dcm mag as a whole.

If our emails get used what can we do exactly, who do you complain too for example ?  I could be wrong but I assume the galleries will need to be redone by the users, perhaps that will freshen the place up.

I might have missed something here. Can someone tell me about the password user id problem at DCM as I have not received an email from them (typical).

The site has been hacked 2 nights in a row. The emails that have been sent out weren't sent out by DCM they were sent by the hackers for a bit of a gloat. I didn't get one either, not sure why some are getting them and some aren't.

There's more discussion on the DCMag flickr group if you want to have a look.

From what I understand, the private details are stored on another server, much like the front page DCM website is a different web site (ip 83.245.11.73) from the forums (83.245.11.98). The passwords should be encrypted, and so shouldn't be readily available - unless someone has responded to the email request for people to change their passwords and entered it to the system at that time.

As for private details...other than an email address, there wasn't anything substantive, was there? Time zone, age, web site...it's not like there were credit card details stored in the forums. There are the private messages, but I wouldn't have used that for anything that was private. The FutureMag web site, where the subscriptions are handled, is a different machine/database entirely.

I went around last night changing my passwords on other forums/web sites just in case my early evening "log in" to the dcm site was compromised (logging into www.dcmag.co.uk is different from the forum site) and they'd replace the login mechanism with a password sniffer. I'd been meaning to do this for a long time (some hadn't been changed in years, now I can't remember any of them :)).

So, odds are, if anything was harvested, it was just email addresses. Mine's been in use for so long that the amount of spam stresses the providers spam filter. Par for the internet course.

I agree with oRGie, the promise of a new site is now a couple of years old, and yes the administration was a complacent, although when they then tried to be a bit more assertive with the management of the users, there were complaints about being overzealous. They did seem to listen and responded (a bit) about the ads, and the final version was a complete hack - the galleries looked terrible. However, the lack of investment in the site (upgrading from a 90's style to something more modern and flexible, fixing outstanding bugs, etc.) is a symptom of the management culture, and this is the management culture that extends well above the web site manager (people that decide how much money should be earned, how much invested, budgetary controls) and puts the constraints on his options. Of course, as with politics and the banking industry, these are not the ones that will be held accountable or responsible.

Peter gave up being a mod because the "new site" was becoming more of a vapour ware issue. (Just to put a line between the mods and the admin staff - the mods only had the controls to delete/edit posts, that's about it and that was used by us very sparingly, so kindly refrain from lumping us all together and tarring us with the same brush).

The only reason I stick(stuck?) around was because of the community and the interface for forums/chat was better than flickr (I can't abide the discussion system there, it's too clunky, but the photo upload is much better).

Beginning to think I have the same problem with my site.  Apart from you guys (which I have to say, I really appreciate), hardly anyone seems to use it.  :'(

Its a shame cos this site is nice, has no ad's, good gallery, easy to use forums and games too :)   I'm going to sort out my pics and start to use the gallery here, perhaps others will follow after the dcm problems, feel free to post about this place on the dcm flickr group, there is a link from there now in the dcm thread. If you like start a thread with link and some info about this site, dcm alternative, free gallery, no ad's etc, if you want to make a little banner I 'm sure I could stick it on the front page somehow. Not much chat over there, but quite a few uploaded pics so people do wander through, its just not a good forum for talking I guess.

I see there's issue's with DCM's servers again today. I can get to the home page but not the forums and not the galleries. Although looks like it's a server issue rather than another hack.

H.

Partly Hugh, I originally agreed to be a Mod on DCM to help out for a 3 month (ish) period up until September 2008, by which time the new site would have gone live. The intention was then to bow out gracefully. The new site launch was then extended until October, then December and then sometime Q1 2009, now just sometime in 2009.

What really got to me was the total lack of response from DCMag to it's regular users, to be honest it was becoming a complete embarrassment to me in that I was continually receiving PM's and Emails from the regulars asking for help to relatively simple matters of admin that were going unanswered in the forums and even after highlighting these to the mag were still unanswered several days later.

To be perfectly honest, try as I might I really couldn't get any sense out of DCM Towers and I felt that the whole site was turning into a complete debacle and I personally wanted no part of it, hence my request for them to cancel my account.

As Hugh Say's, admins on DCMag have very limited powers, they really only have the ability to edit or delete a post, more than that has to be a request to the Mag/Site staff who will look at it when they get a chance and act accordingly, unfortunately this was taking an absolute age and was largely ignored unless several requests were made by me and as a result I became totally disillusioned by the whole process.

I really do hope that DCM can get themselves back on track, somehow I really don't think that the new site will do it for them, first and foremost they have to understand that the "Customer is King" rather than just a PIA, something that to date they simply have just not grasped.

My apologies....Rant over.... but I just wanted to say my piece.

Cheers, Peter.

It seems as though several sites not just DCM are suffering of late.

Think Camera is unmoderated and just carries on but is little used as the magazine have dropped it and not posted any new content for months

EOS Forum went down about 3 weeks ago due to a hosting issue and they still haven't moved to a new host

DCM has been discussed long and hard already.

Looks to me like some of the magazines have lost interest in Forum's.
