Tamron SP 90 F/2.8 Di macro

Anyone else using one of these on here?  Love mine to bits.  Could be a bit quieter on the auto focus system, but overall it seems like a excellent lens for the money.

I got one off of the 'bay for £180. It really is rather good.

I love mine to bits. I use it for macros sometimes with an 1.4 extender to get some more distance and the results are fab. As a portrait lens it is very useable too.
It hunts sometimes a bit much, but the manual pull/push system is great and switching between manual and auto makes it a doddle.

Just got one today & will have a proper play with it tomorrow & post some pics if i get any good ones. I see what you mean about noisy, I am not going to creep up on anything with autofocus on.
Front element seems a long way back, do you use the hood?

I have the SP 90 AF - is that the same, or do I have an older version ? I've had it about a year now.

Sarasocke, I think there are 3 versions of this lens if it has Di on it its one of the newer 2 with optics coated for digi.

I have managed to have a play this afternoon & it really concentrates the mind on DOF. I may also have to revise my vote on tripods if I use it a lot.

I'm pretty sure that's the one I picked up used about a month ago. Minolta mount on my Sony A350. AF hunts a bit so I've pretty much relegated it to the back burner and use MF.

Yes sounds like the one! Af does seem to hunt but then I did'nt buy it for action so probably does'nt matter over much. Thought it might be a cheap portrait type lens more than anything else. Tried it out yesterday when we had to get some shots of the dogs we've got waiting to be re-homed and it seemed OK. Will do a bit more testing today if the weather picks up.

Great stuff Bones.  Can I ask what make of 2x converter you used please.   I have the SP 90 f/2.8 Di and often thought about getting a converter to use on it.

Mick,
I use the Kenko 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 on my Tamron. Works a treat. Also works on the Bigma with AF on a bright day.

Thanks Simon, I think a 1.4x would probably be what I'd go for.  As you say, handy for the bigma. ;)

Mick, mine is a jessops 2x c/afi bought cheap on Ebay looks very similar to the kenko. It was used with my old 70-210 before i got the bigma-it will come out of retirement now!!!!!
Dont forget to add the close up filters.
Tried it on the bigma & not impressed with the results so maybe a 1.4 is the way to go.

I know this is an old thread so if no one reads it, no issue. But....if anyone of you Tamron owners do, I've just come back from a day out at my local (well 2 cities over) Botannical Garden where I was using the Tamron most of the day. I use it full manual as I posted previously, however several times, whilst trying to focus on something, the clutch would engage and the lense would close down. Normal? a glitch in the electrics? It's more startling than anything else, standing there hand on the focus ring and suddenly the lens starts whirring in my hand.
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
