What I don't get (and this is probably down to my lack of experience using a count down on a camera) is that the squirrel is in perfect focus yet the subjects they were taking the shot of are not in focus.

Surely when setting the shot up they set the focal point being one of the 2 people sat on the rock meaning that the squirrel should be out of focus. I can't imagine the camera would autofocus at the time of shot as there is a danger it could have focussed on anything in the scene.

 ???

Photo bombing and photoshop are possibly key words , as there is no Exif data I could find to suggest it is a single exposure - Who knows? It could be a pet or partially tame squirrel and the settings based accordingly?

Steve, that was my initial thought, why is the squirrel in focus? And amazing how the squirrel placed itself in the frame so both people could still be seen, maybe it is just good luck or maybe I’m being hyper cynical today!!    :legit:

Still made me smile though  :)

The focus thing is easy to understand.

I can set the focus on my DSLRs to either manual or automatic on timer - and if I am in the shot somewhere I always set it to automatic, so it focuses as the shutter is released - so if the camera is set on spot focus (or is a Canon set to auto, which we all know focuses anywhere it damn well pleases, but never on what we want - he says bitterly after a week with a 550D) it would have focused on the squirrel just as it popped into the frame. I'm pretty sure that my compact focuses on the biggest nearest thing in the frame too when it's on 'intelligent', whatever that means exactly.

Yeah DSLRs will generally focus like that on timer.

Nat Geo published the pic online.  They will have had access to a much higher res and are used to spotting fakes so my assumption is that they believe it's genuine.  AFAIK they have never published a "yeah this was an April fool" update.  There's a comment on their site that says Snopes reckons it's probably fake but I can't find a reference on Snopes site.

Amazingly enough I reckon this pic is genuine.

Thought they would, and I do too. But then I'm pretty gullible.

I too thought the Squirrel was well focused . But if the camera is set on auto and I think for self timing it would be, then the nearest object it takes will be in focus .

I used to try and take videos  through the window and I'd get the window if it wasn't spotless.

So it could wel be a genuine photo
