more street photography

Saw this having not come across David Peat's work before, and thought others may enjoy it too http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-14126913 No telephoto lens either; and as he says, with greater emphasis on privacy perhaps its a declining art  :legit:

Wonderful stuff, just stumbled across it a minute or so ago. It's nice to see the work of an accomplished photographer without all the pretentious twaddle that usually accompanies such an exhibition.

Totally agree, I would love to see more of his work.    Perhaps there ought to be a point in time (x number of years after a shot is taken) when privacy laws exempt the need of a signature to publish, such that the art can survive with all its clarity and true grit.

Really enjoyed that, thanks for highlighting it Andy.  The bloke with the fishing rod, just brilliant.

I really wish I had the eye to see the photograph, can you learn it or are you born with it?

My guess is that you are born with it and you can learn it. Looking at the shots there is an element of humour shining through quite a few of them and that possibly reflects the togs view of life in general.  ;) Quirky things often stand out and perhaps the secret is to always carry a camera at the ready.

Lovely stuff. It would indeed be sad to lose this style of recording social history through the panics that go on now re: photography. It`s not like we are hacking their phone / lives!

I think an individuals privacy is very important, especially in a vastly different world with Internet of today etc. I would not be happy to breach anyones privacy even in public places. So I am all for the privacy laws that abound. I do however think a registered time span would satisfy, as the Art is not for money or of criminal purpose but simply one of social record.

I think it's an attitude to life that makes you see things that are unusual, quirky, amusing as far as street photography is concerned.

I suppose there are those street shots that show misery, degredation and squalor and I'm not too sure what your attitude is then, a bit of a crusader I suppose.

Elliot Erwitt has the former in abundance. 8)

No telephoto lens either; and as he says, with greater emphasis on privacy perhaps its a declining art  :legit:

And it's completely understandable, what with being depicted as either, a pedophile, terrorist or paparazzi is it any wonder street togs are reluctant to take to the field? :'(
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Some born, some not
some learn what works and what doesn't
some sit and wait.

Some just go out to shoot and shoot and shoot and so practice/get used to it, so it does not bother them no more.

Only way to learn it is to go out loads and shoot

You wouldn't think so if you go on flickr. There's loads of street photography groups. There are also various sites purely for street photography and street candids. I'm getting braver and use a 35mm or 50mm as it's the only way to get that shot.

Agreed, Street Photography is  alive and kicking on Flickr as shown by the number of groups that are there. Unfortunately street photography seems to mean different things to many different people.
Of the thousands of contributors that post their pictures there they seem to be under the impression that because their picture has been taken in the street it automatically becomes 'Street Photography' when perhaps it should be urban landscape or candid photography.

It depends on what you mean by Street Photography?  ???

I doubt there is a definitive as every shot is a record of a moment in time, be it a wreck of a building, eyesore sky scraper or a litterbin being peed on by a dog; all may effectively display some element of human hand and document a social aspect of the time.
