Nikon Repair
« on: April 13, 2011, 11:06:04 PM »
I mentioned week before last how my D200 had fallen from a table and I'd ended up with a star crack on the display panel. I just recieved the estimate from Nikon it's roughly 150 Pounds for the repair. Does that sound reasonable? I can't find a parts manual to figure out whether the piece is just a cover on the display or if it's an integral part of the display. The display did still work and camera did still function.

I think that's a bit steep, as I don't think they have to take the camera apart to fit the new screen.  :o

That's basically what I was trying to determine. Are they just replacing a 1 " x 2"  piece of glass/plastic or is it some mini lcd screen. I can't find an exploded layout of the parts anywhere. Certainly the estimate they sent me doesn't explain anything about what the "repair" entails.

Um, does it matter.....?

Nikon are probably the only people who will repair this so from a consume point of view it doesn't really matter if they are ripping you off for a bit of plexi or heavily discounting the cost of having magic elves weave you a component from sunbeams and pixie dust.

150 quid for the repair either way ;)  So if it makes you feel better I'd go with the elves and sunbeams.

FWIW every repair I've had done has come in under the estimate.

Jonathan, I hate to sound like a stereotype here, but I am on a pension and that's a lot of money. It would have been a lot of money when I was still working. I've also discovered from a Flickr discussion (never occurred to me to go there first  :() that Nikon Canada is not held in high regard. I know from finally finding a parts list that the item I have broken is a screen cover which cannot possibly cost Nikon more that a few pennies to manufacture so most of the cost would be labour. The fact that the estimate doesn't even break down the repair makes me even more suspicious. The camera still functions, the damage is at worst cosmetic. I think I'll just live with it.

Yes, but my point was that it doesn't really matter whether what they charge is "fair" (because they fastened a lot of stuff to the screen) or "unfair" because it's just a bit of plastic but were trying to rob you.

It's not like you could make your own or shop around - they have a monopoly on the repair :(

FWIW Nikon UK labour charges are about £75 an hour.  I had an expensive repair recently because although the part was cheap they had to strip down most of the camera.  From what you say I'd expect it's a pricey, simple to fit part.  But of course they get to set the price of the part too.

The camera still functions, the damage is at worst cosmetic. I think I'll just live with it.

Probably best.  I mean somebody might pinch it tomorrow and then you'd have to get a new one from the insurance.....

 Spin.
Read Jonathan's last sentence carefully. I think he's trying to say something. ;)

Given my arthritis in all four extremities, I'm not weather proof anymore either.  ;D I don't venture out in the rain.
