Rule bending camera work.

After recording it I managed to watch the final episode of the BBC's 'Luther' yesterday evening, what a cracking series. Apart from the dynamic storyline and performance of the cast, what I found intriguing was the composition of shots of the actors in scenes where they alone appeared on the screen.

Not all, but a large percentage, of the shots placed the head and shoulders of the actors tight in the bottom quarter of the screen with the remainder of the screen with an out of focus background. I'd noticed this during the first three episodes and I suppose I was specifically looking for it last night. I found it very effective and it fitted in well with the overall 'feel' of the programme. If you haven't seen it I expect it is available on BBC i-Player.

The final scenes were shot in the now defunct Eurostar terminal at Waterloo. I think you could have some fun in there with a multitude of possible images available. That's if you could gain access!

Like you I`ve been watching this - more for the camera work than the actual story. A bot too much of the always angry , rebellious copper who beaks all the rules and is ofter the target for it. Noticed the same style as you and really liked it.
Logged onto thephotography red button bit after Springwatch last night and interesting seeing those shots. Surprised at the level of knowledge from a couple of the presenters and agreed with the main guy about the crop on the puffin shot that made pic of the day - I`d just said the same to my wife who just about tolerates my interjections in such as Luther etc to say "That`s nicely shot". much better than when I am dropping my daughter off somewhere and say "Ooh isn`t that light lovely" - to which she invariably replies "Saddo - get a life"- with a smile. ;)

Interesting - I have Luther Sky+'ed for a quiet night.  I'll have to watch out for the shooting.

And yeah, I'd love to shoot in the Eurostar Terminal.  I'll have to make some enquiries...

i would definitely be keen to join in a trip to the old Eurostar terminal Jonathan - if it is possible to arrange for a not extortionate fee...

As would I, the thought of getting some shots of the now derelict eurostar platforms etc would be awsome especially as I have some fond memories of eurostar not least of all because it was where Georgia and I set off for our Honeymoon or La Lune du Miele as the French would say.  ;)
