today my wireless mouse has lost the ability to "go back" when you run 2 fingers over the top of it, any ideas why?

I'm guessing your describing the new magic mouse, my wireless mighty mouse nipple died. I ordered one, then found a wired mighty mouse in a cupboard so cancelled the order. That said, the magic mouse works using finger swiping and gestures like the pad on my macbook pro. I had an incident not long after having received it, all the gestures suddenly stopped working. Eventually I went into the system prefs, into the mouse settings and they were turned off. I must have hit a combination on the keyboard that turned them off. I'd suggest checking that out - also check your batteries - there will be an indicator in the mouse settings on system prefs. Other than that, the usual repair of disk permissions check (applications, utilities, disk utility). I just had a quick look on the Apple support forums to see if anyone else is reporting issues - only one person is asking about a mouse freezing, not the same as your issue.

Hope one of those helps.

Has there been a bit of auto-spell checking going on here?

I find it prudent to do a permissions check on a fairly regular basis - it keeps things running smoothly. just remember to repair any issues after verifying - all in the same place. Glad you got it sorted!
