Nikkor 70-210mm f4/5.6 D

As recommended by Ken Rockwell - but don't let that put you off!
Old metal bodied lens from the 1990s. Push/pull design pretty lightweight but very sturdy compared with some modern budget offerings. Two versions - the D version focusses faster but I believe the optics are identical. There's also a similar f4 version which comes up fairly often on ebay.

If you can find a good one without having to pay over the odds then it seems a better option quality wise than a cheap modern 70-300mm. The focussing is fast [but not spectacular!] if a bit clunky in comparison to a modern AF-S. As with all second hand lenses care needs to be taken when buying as there can be a variation in quality.
