General Discussion / Re: What bemused you today?

Agreed about bulbs should be easy to change. I remember being able to change a headlight bulb without even needing a screwdriver- in fact, years ago I used to carry a spare.

Some years back, I recall that to change a bulb in the dashboard on the car we had then required taking the whole front off  - a classic £100 labour, 60p parts...

Congrats on the new car Steven, sounds like a good excuse to me.  Mind you, some cars you have to strip most of the front off just to get to the headlight bulb which is ridiculous, it should be something anyone can do on the side of the road.

A week or so ago, Sue showed me an article which detailed things that Gen whatever-they-are (I get lost with all these new fangled terms  :) ) can't do and leave to the experts. One of the relatively common items was changing a light bulb...

Well, I just found myself unable to change a light bulb when the nearside headlight and sidelight failed on our car. Naturally, when in that position, the only thing to do was to get a new car...

And although the above paragraph is correct and accurate, like a politician's statement it's completely misleading. The car in question is a Renault Scenic which we bought new back in 2007. The light bulb failure was due to water entering the light, and corroding the connections. Renault no longer supply parts for the vehicle, so it would be a case of scouring scrap yards or ebay for the parts. Given that our garage also reported wear on the bushes (naturally, parts no longer available  >:( ) it seemed a new car was required. Amazingly, we found one on the day that the garage, having tried and failed to find alternatives for all the parts needed, reported that the car had basically reached end of life.

So, new car tomorrow, as I couldn't change a light bulb.

I don't really have a favorite time. I just snap away when I'm out. That does carry certain implications, as I'm not an early riser. Come evening, I'm happy to curl up at home.

That said, I like the light late afternoon in summer.

Yes cycling computer - measures, speed, distance, altitude and navigates to either a route you create or one it creates for you.

As for gears - I have 12 - 2 on the front ring and 6 on the back. And you can get them that change electrically via pushbuttons on the bars, which are wireless too. Oh and they can change automatically depending on cadence, speed and make sure you don't cross chain. (I don't have this yet - but I can see the use if you have arthritis in the hands!)

Cycling computer! I still find the idea of having more than 3 gears amazing - and intimidating. Then again, things were all simpler back in the 1950/60s...

I had nothing relating to photography this year - there is nothing I realistically need (Well if I had won the lottery big, there are a few things I would get  ::) )

But I did get a few things for my cycling hobby. I got a new winter top, fingerless gloves and water bottle - and I put some money from my Mum towards a rear radar (It detects vehicles coming up from the rear and displays them on the cycling computer)

I've only been back on a bike for the last year or so - picked up my first (2nd hand) bike around a year ago - and bought a new one in July. I've ridden over 2500miles in 2024 and am aiming to double it this year - as I have a fairly major change to my life coming in April - semi retirement :) 13 weeks away - not that I'm counting or anything!

A belated merry Christmas. Photographically, I got a book on the first 30 years of Scottish photography and a book on the history of 19th century art. I also received a set of post it notes in the shape of cats, and a set of paper clips ditto.
