Camera Craniums: The Photography Community for Enthusiasts

There's a tendency for people to shoot certain subjects in what I would call the list of 'essentials':

Sunrise/set - if you're ever going to do landscapes
A Robin - that most cheerful of birds and very photogenic
A Swan - usually plenty about but, ironically, can be somewhat challenging due to extreme whiteness!
The Moon - always a surefire winner
Water Drops - usually one for the list
Smoke Trails - more of a late contender but often appears

So, have you completed the list?
Any others for the list?

A Robin - that most cheerful of birds and very photogenic  - the cat ate ours
A Swan - usually plenty about but, ironically, can be somewhat challenging due to extreme whiteness!  - never really managed to get close enough, even with a long lens
The Moon - always a surefire winner  - not really seriously tried this, but have a few blurry snaps
Water Drops - usually one for the list  been there, done that, they were rubbish
Smoke Trails - more of a late contender but often appears  - I can't be trusted with fire :)

Ahh, good plan to post them! I'll see if I can't dig out my representative list - no water drops or smoke as I just have never felt inspired to shoot them

By low light, do you mean nightime? Done them but never high key portraits (but then I don't really 'do' portraits other than eldest's fashion and the occasional photocall)

Sunrise/set. Yes.
Robin. Only once because it just stayed put while I photographed him. Normally they disappear when I appear.
Swan. Never a good, elegant close up. Plenty 'in the distance.' And last week, some aggressive ones, where I did not dare come too close.
Moon. No. Camera does not reach.
Waterdrops and smoke trails: never been tempted. Don't know if camera can cope.

What about abstracts? Done plenty of those.
Children?
Pets?
The single tree? Never done a good one.
Deliberate Dutch angle? I do accidental ones all the time.
Panning? Tried it, not very good at it.
Light painting? Seems to be popping up regularly.
Milky water. Never tried it.

#1 Sunrise - my first Highly Commended shot (Sigma SD10, Zenitar M42 16mm Fisheye). Done loads - much prefer sunrise so almost always at that time of day

Oh god yes. Always a favourite for the magazines in the Autumn.

Sunrise/sunset - best during the winter when the sunrise is at a civilised time:

Yes...but not since I used digital. Really need a good magnification lens to do it justice.

Nope... like, Howard, I can't be trusted with fire...except for a bit of flambee.

High key portraits:
Only with a flower:

You could also add:
- fireworks
- silhouette
- framed shots
- flowers with a drop of water

HaHa, waterdrops! Like it! Here's my equivalent. Having visited various wildlife, RSPB, reserves, etc looking for Herons, infinitely my best shots were at.......... the service station on the M6!!  :yikes: This Heron totally ignored the audience and even speared a fish a matter of a few feet away - whilst we enjoyed a lovely Costa coffee!

I'm getting worried now! :(

Spent most of the morning looking for all the 'essentials' on my hard disc and not one fits the bill! Can't ever remember taking a sunrise or sunset. There are swans by the score at the end of the road on the Thames, plus the odd heron now and again, but never had the urge to snap 'em. I do have a cheeky robin that waits for me to do a bit of digging,must take a camera when next I turn a bit of earth over next time.

Got a high key landscape that may fit the bill however.

Didn't you mean a 'senior' moment? I have natural blond moments (as well as senior ones), but this, from you,  sounds very colourist! Or am I ageist now?

I always thought this one had a certain feel of hdr about it - no idea how that happened...but it was taken with a Canon  :dance:

That qualifies on two counts - not smiling and the 'pictures of people with craggy lined faces' essential - for those who normally choose colour it would also qualify for the 'I thought this would look in b/w' category [often, for many of us, this means we got the colours completely wrong!]  ::)

Some inspiring shots here. Sue, it's lovely to see your swan shots again. And its remarkable how fuzzy shots can be so in focus.

LOL! How true is that! And I'm the first to put my hand up to admit I don't always plan my B/Ws! Here's a recent one - I knew it would be B/W (for a change - I'm getting there with planning!) but didn't realise how hi-key it would be (and I guess this could qualify for my hi-key shot!) Whilst I'd be the first to acknowledge that macros aren't for everyone - but if you do them you have to have some sort of fungi at some time (maybe this should be in 'essentials - part 2'  ::)) - this one taken a couple of days ago (now we're really getting into fungi season) (Canon 7D, Sigma 105)

Was out looking for fungi (as you do!) whilst walking Dog. Only seem to be rather dull ones around and thin on the ground - so looked for My Tree (know the area quite well, so know specific subjects!). Initially, couldn't find it but found this one - and with the windy sun/cloud conditions (with a little drizzzle thrown in for good measure) thought it worthy of a shot (Canon 7D, Sigma 10-20)
