Liking this lens, do you need a mono/tripod or can you do handheld of sorts with it.

Sorry for late response. This is handheld. The reason the D300 makes it easier is when you set the ISO to Auto and use shutterpriority set at 1/500 or 1/750. The camera makes the decision in upping the ISO if needed andyou always have the right shutterspeed for the focal length. Sometimes when the sun disappears the ISO will go up to 800 (the max I set for Auto) but that is perfectly acceptable for the D300.
