Great idea but not sure it works. I think it might be the colours on the wall that distract.

The watch was an oversight by me, however, you don't have to be poor to have feelings of despair.

The watch is a great contrast suggesting better times in the past in my opinion. I agree the large light area of wall draws the eye and perhaps some fading chalky wall graffiti overlaid in pp would add to the shot; and perhaps a vignette effect for the top right corner giving a feel of the subject being sat in a shaft pool of light would help to hold the eye upon the despair of the dark place. Another idea may be to intro a "fall of shadow" presumably from someone else 'observing?,' in the room; onto the area of lighter wall. A beast after the watch. Look forward to seeing the final result.
