In this case, it is the size of the picture (thumbnail) that makes it impossible to see properly. It's dark, and nothing stands out to grab the attention. I would give it no more than a cursory glance, decide I can't be bothered, and go to the next one.
A title, any title, would probably have made me look twice.

I should have phrased the original statement differently: I hate thumbnails without titles.

But, as we, on CC see thumbnails first, I would prefer every photo to have a title, and when appropriate, a short description.

A photograph can be a masterpiece, a thing of beauty, but very often I would like to know what/where it was shot, simply because I might want to have a look for myself.
