Lightroom 6 - Am I a Luddite?
« on: July 09, 2015, 03:43:00 PM »
Am I the only one who is not in the least bit interested in buying into Adobe's Creative Cloud Scheme? I see no compelling reason to opt for the supposed extra features this version offers. And as far as I'm concerned the Standalone version LR6 is way over priced. And they don't offer an upgrade that I can find.

And more, much more than this, I did it my way

I don't use LR, but I have a built-in prejudice against everything 'cloud.' I simply don't trust it.
I'm constantly being told, it's the way forward, but to my laywoman's mind everything on/in a cloud is vulnerable.
I prefer to keep things on my own hard drives.

I agree with you both.
I did buy and I do use LR4.4, but I refuse to go along with this "cloud bollox" and upgrade.
If I ever find that 4.4 no longer fits my needs I will get myself a freebie programme with basic tools.

You can buy lightroom 6 or the upgrade. I upgraded months ago.
As I have CS6  and lightroom, there's no way I would go to to CC.

I'm still happy with CS2, which does all I want. I see myself as a photographer, not a graphic artist, and my needs don't go beyond what I could do in a darkroom.

I don't like subscription models, which mean a constant drain of money. Adobe reckons that it means the user is always up to date with the latest bugs - sorry, improvements - but I prefer to know where I stand with "funnies". Plus there's the nagging doubt that one day, if I use the new features I may find that unless I flatten the image I'm reliant on the latest version to access my files. Meaning that my work depends on Adobe not going under or discontinuing the product. I know that Adobe is the big player in image editing, just as Lotus are the leaders in spreadsheets and everyone uses Wordstar for word processing, and nothing bad has happened to those products, but still...

Depending on an internet connnection for editing isn't something I'm happy about. OK, it may only call home every 30 days, but can I guarantee not being without an internet connection for however long it takes to have the product die? I have been without a phone line more than once (most recently because copper thieves tried to remove the phone cables near an exchange).

So, I'm out of the whole CC thing.

Anyone remember Adobe getting hacked a while back? For some reason for the last few days I've been receiving a couple of emails a day where the senders got my email address from Adobe (I know, because having my own domain I personalise email addresses to the company, so I know who leaked/released my details). I interpret it as a warning that anything on line is fair game for hackers, and some companies attract them more than others.

Yes, I remember. I haven't received any emails yet.  ???

Lightroom CC is still installed on your computer it is not in the 'Cloud'. All it does is 'call Adobe' once a month to check that you have paid this months software rental fee. All your images and the software are still on your computer.

True. But what happens when it tries to contact Adobe and fails? Clearly, Adobe won't let you continue using the software if you haven't paid, and equally clearly disabling internet access before opening the software is just too obvious a thing to do for Adobe not to have considered it. So, how long does it give you between the first failed attempt and saying - "no pay, no use"? It wasn't that long ago that Adobe themselves were "down" for a while following a hacking incident. I'm just looking at practical difficulties; I've no intention of going down the "hire but no purchase" route with software.

As ever it`s a personal decision. No-one makes you. Some find it helpful to have the latest version others are less bothered. For me it`s cost. I stopped at Lightroom 3.6 and CS6 on good deals whilst eligible for education use in one case and it will do me now. I don`t want to work with more mp either so don`t want to buy a D8100. No-one is a Luddite for not wanting it and no one is a graphic artist rather than a photographer for going with the latest version on the cloud - just personal choice.

There is a stand alone upgrade but they do not make it easy to find.    LR is already at 6.1 and there is a difference.  LR CC got an upgrade that LR 6.1 did not.

Look here for options to get the LR 6 upgrade http://photorumors.com/2015/04/21/here-is-the-direct-link-to-downloadupgrade-the-standalone-version-of-adobe-lightroom-6/
