Take a look at some crisp and stunning B+W work and then perhaps go to the web site of this accomplished photographer.

Amazing. I have been dabbling in monochrome for some time, but haven't got very far yet, I realise now.

Particularly impressed with the infrared ones, something I have never tried.

Is it just me as the B&W photos look like heavy contrast has been applied?  ???

Oldboy I agree these have had some kind of ps work done. I recognise this from having looked at creating the 'dragan effect'. Possibly a high pass filter.  However I like the dragan effect and these images are lovely.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to achieve a half decent B+W without some form of post processing, either digitally or wet process.

In conversations on the times we have met I know that Roger is a great fan of SilverFX Pro. The Dragan effect is one of those fads that come and go but is useful to have in your locker where the occasion suits it. Not in the case of this work from RH I think.

Yes the guy says he uses Silver Efex Pro on the  link - high harsh structure setting I am guessing with adjustments which gives a great effect on older faces and accentuates lines. Not everyones cup of tea but I think it works well on these.

I have to admit that I found the non portrait work overdone, and portraits right on the edge. To me it looks like way too much local contrast has been used; and potentially monochrome HDR. But as you say Alan, it's a matter of taste.
