Ringflash
« on: December 30, 2013, 08:19:20 PM »
Is it normal for a ringflash, used as a fill light, to have a shadow all round the subject? If not, how do I minimise this? Have looked online and some images have this shadow, some don't. It's new and don't yet know what Im doing.

What sort is it? I know my orbis ring flash sells itself  as not casting shadows and softening light.  am sure I could boost the flash and create shadows in certain environments but generally no and certainly wouldn`t want it for macro work.

Its only a cheapish one - a Meike. Didn't wanna pay big bucks until I knew a ring flash was for me.

I've got a Metz 15 "ring flash" which actually isn't a ring of flash, but two lateral flashes with a ring diffuser. I do use it for macro, like these:

I don't find it works too well for portraits, as I tend to like an off axis single light source for those kind of shots.

Yes, the halo shadow is the characteristic effect of ring flash - as popularised by David Bailey in the 1960s.

Like any light source, the less diffused the light, the more pronounced the shadows. A point light source will cast sharp shadows, and a large enough light source will be shadow free. You can see this effect outdoors as the difference between the shadows cast by a harsh sun on a clear day and the shadows (if any!) in a fog.

If you want to diffuse your ring flash, you could try some diffusing material over the light source; but the effect will depend on the design of the flash.

It`s not a given with all ring flashes. As I said my orbis ringflash is an excellent diffuser which used correctly leaves images shadow free. Maybe it is better built than yours to do but it comes at a premium. Love using mine for macro and certain portraits but don`t always want the circles in the eye catchlight.
