Scanning Glass Positives
« on: November 28, 2012, 08:13:28 AM »
Has anyone done this?

Any tips gratefully received.

Meanwhile I need to find the film attachment for my scanner to try to get a better result from the glass positives I am trying to get restored prints from . . might try backing them with a piece of mirror as the white scanner lid isn't doing them any favours.

It looks like the first one I tried was pretty damaged compared to the others, as the next couple have scanned OK, even on 'auto'.

They're really interesting things. There are two almost identical exposures on each plate, they only appear to be at slightly different points of focus and possibly different exposures, which makes me think that these were taken by a specialist camera with a view to producing a stereoscopic projection. Fascinating!

Alas, I do not have any other information about them yet - I know they were taken in Brittany around the time of WW1 - judging by the car that is in the first plate and the clothes I would guess after rather than before. Must try to find out more.

Here is one of the plates, straight out of the scanner (resized):

My aunt died several years ago aged 99 and in clearing her house I found a box of old glass negatives (size maybe 6x4 inch thereabouts) which I scanned on an Epson V500 flat-bed with a light attachment.
I thought the results were pretty good.....

Interesting photographs.

Howard, have you tried playing with the stereo shots in layers to see the effect as would be if projected.

That looks a very intense bright white Simon, but lovely detail. I guess the gown is of silk.

Simon - That's a good result. I've had good results with negatives in the past, but these positives are proving a bit tricky - not least because my Canon scanner had decided not to work at all and I can't find the film adapter for the Epson one.

Andy - they're definitely stereoscopic - the images do not directly overlay and the focal points are front on one and towards the back in the other.
