This weeks topic for the competition is...

PENETRATING LIGHT

This weeks challenge is simply to portray penetrating light.

The subject matter is totally up to you, from translucent objects or materials to very moody landscape, street scene, interior or studio shot.

No restrictions on any PPing

Pictures to be taken between 00.01am Monday 29th Oct 2012 to 23:59 Sunday 4th Nov 2012 .
Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59pm Monday 5th November 2012.
Poll will be up Tuesday 6th November 2012.
Winner to be announced Saturday 10th  November  2012.

The Rules for the weekly competition are...

By entering you agree to take responsibility to
Post a topic on the Sunday following your declared win
Create an entries thread
Create a chat thread
Create a poll for that weeks comp and declare the winner on the Saturday
(if for any reason there is a problem and no subject is posted by the winner by Monday night admin will advise second place winner to post the topic asap, do the poll etc)

In case of a tie, the first entry posted wins.

Almost no light at all here today! It's back to grey murk, after the one off, sunny day we had yesterday.

I actually have an early idea - like it when that happens as it means I can take my shot early in the week and put the thoughts about competition to bed..Hate it when it's on my mind all week. I usually then end up with a daft, last minute entry that pants!

Almost no light at all here today! It's back to grey murk, after the one off, sunny day we had yesterday.

Dull light here too - but it can still penetrate  as candle light will through tracing paper - I've just got to seek out an exciting image idea.

I've got some tracing paper somewhere, but haven't got a clue where.
Paper and candles spell danger for me though! I'll have to come up with something else! Rather a busy week ahead, but I'll keep it in mind and give it a go as and when.

It was not a fixed suggestion Reinardina  (and I know how difficult the task is in dull or flat light situations of wintry overcast days) it was more a suggestion of creating an environment where you have control of the lighting if necessary.

I realised that!
I normally do not think about competition shots beforehand. Just keep mind and eyes open in the hope something will come up. It usually does. If not, I go out with the specific idea to find something that fits the brief; I very seldom set something up, and do a studio shot. Only do that, as the very last resort.

A very interesting topic.
I knew this morning's low bright sun would stream into the church stained glass window, and I hoped the colours would show brightly on the pews. They don't. But this can be my backup shot in case I don't find something better.

As said, I keep mind and eye open for competition ideas. And lo and behold, I saw some good examples of light penetration tonight!

Took some shots and here they are. Not sure I'll use any of them, but at least I've got a back up!

Well here is my back up shot    A quickie, just in case time and opportunity are against me.

I've been out shooting lots and lots of photographs, trying to capture 'penetrating light.'
The best ones were of a ray of sunshine falling on a yellow leaf. Then I realised, the light had already penetrated the shade, to fall on the leaf. Penetrated light, rather than penetrating.

So I went back to my night shot of the moon trying to penetrate some light cloud. With a bit of a struggle, I dragged the moon forward and made it visible.

Just in case this is considered cheating, I point to the lights of the houses on the hill that are penetrating the dark! Hence the title!

I tried for a similar shot like this in the Summer in tenerife. There were insects on the leaves and as the sun penetrated the leaf, the insect (from behind the leaf) was in silhouette. However, each time I tried to get the shot of the silhouette, the bleeding insects would fly off!!!

Were you wearing perfume? As some insects seem to have a defence mechanism beyond their sight.
