Flash for Canon 40D
« on: October 26, 2011, 05:36:40 AM »
Hi all
Would like some advice on buying flash for above camera. I have a ring flash for macro work which is the main eason for using this camera, but now the mmmm birthday is here and family would like to get me flash so that I can use with other lens. I don't want them paying silly money because as I said I have a ring flash. Would really appreciate some input before they start throwing their money about.

Thanks Janet

Depends on what you intend to use it for. On my 40D I used to have the Sigma 530 and it was good but then I went to the Canon 580 exii what a difference so much more versatile and configurable. I used my sons 40D with the Sigma 500 at the weekend and I really missed the 580 took several test exposures to get what I wanted. If you don't need the power look at the 430 but it really comes down to what you want to use it for.

There are other dedicated flashguns out there from Yongnuo (cheapest), Nissin and Metz to name the ones that immediately spring to mind. All of them are much less costly than the Canon equivalents.

As a Pentax user my choice was a bit more limited, so I went for the Metz 58AF. It has a secondary reflector for use with bounce flash (now copied by Nissin) that makes it much more versatile than the single reflector designs from the main manufacturers. I'm toying with getting a 50AF (much cheapness) for portable wireless set ups.

So there is lots of choice is basically what I'm saying.
