Yo Xboxers - need some advice
« on: January 03, 2011, 12:34:39 PM »
It appears I may "need" an Xbox.

This would be for Kinect and some fitness style stuff plus (of course) COD: Black Ops.  I suspect I'll get bored of it in 3 months or so.

Questions.....

1. Will it all work with my old school CRT telly?  It has Scart but not HDMI

2. Are there different Xboxes?  I thought I heard the ones with the Kinect packs were the ones they couldn't flog.

3. Where's best to buy?  Today might be nice to save a fiver or so.  But I bet a refurb console would be great if it works out cheaper than a new bundle.

Yes you shouldn't have a problem with that at all.  It can be connected in various ways. http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/pages/xbox-360/get-started/console/audio-video.aspx

2. Are there different Xboxes?  I thought I heard the ones with the Kinect packs were the ones they couldn't flog.

There are different ones, but really it comes down to whether you want one with 4GB storage or 250GB storage.  The older Xboxes have a different hard drive which isn't compatible with the new models.  The older ones also don't have a wireless adaptor built in like the new models do.  Don't know about the Kinect stuff though, as we don't have it.

3. Where's best to buy?  Today might be nice to save a fiver or so.  But I bet a refurb console would be great if it works out cheaper than a new bundle.

Best to shop around to be honest, prices vary all the time from shop to shop.  There are lads of second hand ones about, but not sure I'd trust one TBH.

Sorry not much help I'm afraid.  ;)

Thanks :)

I'm assuming 4GB = solid state memory and 250 GB = hard drives.  Any reason I'd need more than 4GB?  Is it basically just game saves?

Not sure if the 4GB is solid state, or if it's a small drive.  Haven't really looked into it yet.  We still have one of the older Xboxes at the moment with a 120 GB drive on the side.

You need the drive space for saved games, and downloadable addons for the games, or any downloadable content.  And you can install the games to your hard drive to make it quieter, those cd drives are pretty noisy and ware out. You can store pics, vids or music on your drive also.  Stream movies to your telly etc.  In fact use it as a media centre.

Thanks - but why would I want to stream media to it for free when I could pay Apple to do that....? :)

lol..  Yeah. it's a bit trickier streaming from a Mac, but I think I read somewhere it can be done.  Also thought you can get sky TV on it too, but haven't tried.

Bear in mind if you get the older (white) xbox it will cost extra for a wifi adaptor.
We got the kids Kinnect for xmas, us oldies were too stiff to move boxing day. Great fun though. We have also lost a light fitting and nearly the telly when one of the kids hit it playing volleyball, very clever thing but it makes the centre of the room the best playing area which i guess is where most peoples light fittings are.
