CrazyCameras Warning.....
« on: April 06, 2010, 12:12:28 PM »
A relative of mine tried to order a camera from this firm, But it Didn't arrive :'( :'(

It is now in the Hands of her Credit card company who say that they have had several dealings with this firm.

http://www.crazycameras.co.UK/index.php

They say that they are a UK company but after doing some digging I personally think that they are a USA and are importing from elsewhere. The voice on there answerphone is US and they do NOT have a Mailing address and it is illegal under the Distance selling regulations not to give a postal/mailing address.

Ian, this isn't going to make your relative feel any better but I run a Firefox add on called Web Of Trust that rates web sites Green, Yellow, Red and this site is a definite Red when I went to it. Sorry. :(

Yes, Stay well clear of this one. Friend of mine ordered a 100-400 L lens a fortnight ago. She has cancelled the order, which they said could not be cancelled, but Mastercard is retrieving payment.

     Registrant's address:
         691 Dell Road
         Juno
         AK
         63209
         United States

Registrant George Hill of the above address.

Definitely a site to give a wide birth...
Oh and get their little instruction that you should allow all pop ups from the site - really? Why not just ask for your bank and credit card details while they're at it!

This WOT add-on sounded interesting Spin until I did a bit more reading from the download site https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3456?src=api . Are you really sure that you want this on your machine?

There' been quite a bit about this company on the computer forums, none of it good.

Extract from http://alaskaoregonwesternwashington.bbb.org/article/camera-hunters-go-crazy-over-delayed-products-14828

"Crazy Cameras: Complainants indicate that the business promises 5 to 7 day product delivery, but consumers do not receive orders until 4 to 7 weeks later—despite the immediate credit card charges. When contacting the company for an explanation, consumers' phone calls go answered or they receive a generic e-mail response to cancel orders online. While Crazy Cameras presents the image of a United Kingdom-based company on www.crazycameras.co.uk, they claim a Portland location: 11918 SE Division St, #905. However, this address belongs to 'Mail Room Plus' and #905 is a drop-box number. To date, BBB has not been able to identify a local address for this company or valid Oregon business licensing. With an influx of inquiries and complaints since September 2009, Crazy Cameras has an "F" rating with BBB."

I think those negative reviews are someone's sour grapes. It hasn't slowed my browsing activity that I've noticed and if it's turned me away from 'legitimate' web sites by being overzealous it's an inconvenience I can live with. As for logging my browsing activity somewhere I'm not bothered. That's what spam filters are for. It's an unobtrusive circle on my toolbar that changes colour unless I hit a 'red' site then it pops up a warning. I'm paranoid and cynical in my old age anyway so it fits my personality  ;D.

Then again I don't have the benefit of being able to read other languages as I believe you can, so I can't get the full effect of the reviews.  ;)

Thanks for all your comments, I have now taken over the fight for her as she has gone away to Scotland.

I go around to her flat about every day and check her emails and since the credit card company has taken up the job there have been no more mails.

I to loaded up the add on for firefox and I'm having no problems with my system.

Thanks again

Ian
