In the latest Outdoor photography magazine there is a photo on page 26 of Bedruthan Steps with Pink Thrift in the foreground and the photo looks great. It also says that Pink Thrift can form dense carpets on cliff tops during May and June so we might be lucky.

Hi Sandy!

We're there every year in May, and I can confirm that there's pink thrift carpets everywhere - gorgeous!

Less than two weeks now before we set off - thank goodness we're not flying, goodness know how long it'll take to get everything sorted again, after the volcano on Island quietens down.

So shall we confirm Bedruthan Steps as a definite for the sunset shot and maybe St Michael's Mount as a sunset shot?

Eileen

They sound like good options. I'm going to check tide times as parts of the Steps are only accessible at low tides and ideally we should try to get there then. Will get back to you as soon as I can. :)

Good thinking Eileen - wrong tide and it could be a dark blue frothy carpet :D

Sandy

The photo was taken at the top of the steps because of the pink thrift in the foreground, but I should think the whole area will be lovely.

I've seen some wonderful pictures taken from beach level at the steps. Tides aren't so great for us for this trip (ideally we'd have a low tide at the steps shortly after sunrise or sunset) but one option would be to arrive there early, take pictures from the cliff top in the morning light and then, if we feel up to it, move down towards the beach as the morning progresses. Some parts of the beach would remain inaccessible unless we stayed until early afternoon, but for anything that we could get to we would know that the tide is going out so there's no chance of being cut off.

Here are sunrise and sunset and tide times:

For this period the sunrise time is 05:33 and sunset as 21:01, although it'll vary slightly according to how far west we are - these times are for Newquay.  There is a new moon on 14th May and the tide times for Newquay that day are:

High water 05:58 and 18:14
Low water 00:03 and 12:20

For 15th May:
High water 06:35 and 18:52
Low water 00:40 and 12:57

For 16th May:
High water 07:17 and 19:34
Low water 01:21 and 13:38

Times for Bedruthan Steps will be around 10-15 minutes later than those above.

For St. Michael's Mount I think we should aim to get there with some time to spare - say 7-ish, - to allow time to explore and get set up.

As you say Eileen, not great times for our visit.

Question also to be asked is 'what time is sunrise and sunset expected to be?
I'll have to have a look.

Andrew I see that Eileen  has put the times in her post

Thanks Irv.

So question being - are we gonna try and make sunrise and sunset and/ or high and low tides?

irv_b

we may have to decide closer to the time when we see what the weather is going to be like

We're leaving on Thursday (day after tomorrow) so I shan't be in the forum before we meet on the 15th.

Andrew, I'm sending you some telephone numbers in case something should happen that I should know about.

Yeah ! Cornwall here we come!

No new postings since we left home ... we're online for a couple of days, so I thought I'd log in.

We've been in Cornwall for a week now. We've managed to stay dry but it's really cold! Today seems to be the coldest day yet. I would estimate about 9° at the moment, but with the wind it feels more like 5. Still anything could happen within the next 7 days.

I'm a little confused to where we're going to be meeting, what with the different tide times at Bedruthan and all. Are we still heading Heligan for 10am? If the weather doesn't change, I really do think we'd be better off somewhere a little more sheltered :)

Anyway, we've bought online time till wednesday, so I'll be logging in occasionally to see what's what.

The long range forecast don't seem to bad for the w/end

but you know how things can change so I'd still bring something shower proof as well as warm clothing
