can a complete noob build a basic website to upload and show photos?
I'm not looking to win any awards, just somewhere to show the rest of the far flung family some of our family snaps, i know there are easier ways but a site would be good.

Building a web site is quite easy with a few days to spare. Your problem is the web space which will require parting with a bit of dosh given the amount you will need for pictures.

You could use Photobox. Open a pro account fir free, upload the pictures into a gallery and apply permissions. Send the family a link and if they want copies of the pcitures the can order them on line... Simples...

Then their is Flickr...

I'll let the others come in now for their take.

Hi Alan,

You have a mac, you got iLife bundled onto it which comes with both iPhoto (did I read you bought Aperture?) and iWeb. These softwares will make up a really really simple, effective website that is easy to manage, upload photos. Your issue, as has been said, is where to have it hosted. I use mobile me - again Apple - yes its not the cheapest but the other benefits it gives me personally (email and calendars all syncing across my 3 different devices) it is worth it. There are other places you can upload your iWeb website which only host web sites which are a cheaper option. Have a look at mine (PM send - you will see part of it - most of it is hidden behind a firewall and password - set up within iWeb - and is for family only, allowing family members who live abroad, to see photos, small videos etc of my son as he grows).

Also there are various all in one hosting and design sites - there are some which you pay for, others which are free. Have a look at the following (no idea as to how good they are): http://www.wix.com/
http://www.moonfruit.com/
https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?continue=http%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2F&service=jotspot&passive=true&ul=1
https://www.godaddy.com/

Others will be along to suggest others to look at.

Mac version is here - http://jalbum.net/software

Using Jalbum you could have your first website built in an hour.  They do hosting now and I'm pretty sure it's free.

If you have iWeb and a Mobile Me subscription (30 day free trial) you could have a site on the web in 20 minutes.

But Flickr's faster ;)

I've got a website using Streamline which is very cheap and very easy to set up using their site wizard. We also use them for our car sales website. Downside for the photo side if you want to show them in all their glory is they downsize them - but at least that makes them less desirable to nick! Must admit I just bung all mine on Flickr though these days ::)

Jalbums hosting is free upto 30Mb - you do get some ads - but then its free! http://jalbum.net/accounts

I use www.webs.com. It's free and looks o.k. The only downside is an advert on top of the page. You can edit the pages as many times as you like as there are various templates. You can also buy a domain namne if you want. This is my site www.njtphotography.webs.com. As you can see it has webs in the title. :-[ Go and have a look and see what you think of their layout.
