Title: Post your best shots here
Post by: oRGie on October 11, 2009, 03:07:39 PM
Craig's question about where to post a pic made me realise we were missing this thread, so here it is...

Not easy to choose favourite photos, but here a couple I am particularly proud of

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_3590.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/3590.jpg)

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_boat.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/boat.jpg)

Would be a great start to the thread if we all posted some of our own favourite shots, then post whatever you feel you want to share, new or old

Had a discussion about this thread title on the old site. If it's your best image you can only post one, you can't have more than one best image!

Went to Mallory Park on Sunday to see the Motor Cross.
Had a good day, although due to the revised layout, and possibly the Tv coverage, you couldn't get that close to the off-road section on the start finish straight and at the back of the circuit, they took the off road section inside the track - meaning it was farther away than nomal - a 300mm lens was essential to get close to the action - and I'm pretty sure I saw some 500mm and possibly 600mm Canon lenses around the place!

I've posted a couple on the gallery - but this is one that I was fairly pleased with.

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_IMG_5324%20EOS-1D%20Mark%20III%20copy.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/IMG_5324%20EOS-1D%20Mark%20III%20copy.jpg)

Sailent details are: 1/25", @ 300mm focal length on a 1DMkIII. Hand held.

The lens was a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 EX HSM that I'd hired. One of the good things was the zoom ring went the right way!!

This was one of only half dozon or so I took at this speed - and this was the only keeper.

A few years ago I had two things in mind, 1. To get a Football League Photographers Licence ( My Passion )  &  2. LRPS ( Royal Photographic Society ). The second involved submitting 10 prints to the society with a theme, which got me thinking  ( other sports ) and having been self employed for the last 1/4 century  I have the nerve ( or cheek ) to approach anyone , so I contacted the Media Manager at Oulton Park.

This was my first and hardest hurdle but he did suggest that if I was covering a driver or team for any Local newspaper relevant to them then all I would  need was a covering letter from the said Local Paper and I would be in there with all the " Pro's " on the day. So knowing you are into Motor Sport it may be worth finding out where the drivers or teams are from and contact the Local paper to suggest covering the event for them ( For free of course, they love that ! ), but you will get some fantastic pictures on the day.  I gave up on Oulton Park because the nearest local hero to us was Carl Foggerty from Blackburn but he had retired by then.

I didn't give up and next contacted Haydock Park Racecourse by e.mail and explained I was doing ( "something"  ) for the Royal Photographic Society and would it be possible to take some shots on a race day.  The day after I received a e.mail from the Racecourse inviting me to the next meeting and instructions on complementary parking and where to get my Press Pass.

I have attached below a picture I took at Haydock Park which could not have been taken from any spectator area and which I used for my ( LRPS ) so no lies told really.

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_Haydock%20Park%20%28%20Site%20%29.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Haydock%20Park%20%28%20Site%20%29.jpg)

So basically if you want the shots there is allways a way round it.

Regards...Dave     :legit:

Thanks very much it was my lucky day, as I was waiting for the sunset a very kind fisherman landed his boat, I quickly got into position, so I could get the suns reflection between the anchor prongs or what ever you call them LOL, then off back to the village very satisfied for a meal and a bevy. someone was looking down on me that day

Hi

Another of my older favourite shots, I thought Id share with you, hope you like it

Khao San Roi Yot National Park, Southern Thailand, from the beach and after a short long tail boat ride we landed on a beach, we walked up a track through the rainforest which led to another rocky sort of path/ no steps just a rocky worn slippery climb, I wish Id taken shots so you could see how difficult it really was, with a 450m steep uphill mountain trek/climb, it was really hard going, to see the Phra Nakhon cave where there is the Subterranean sanctuary of King Rama V's pavilion, the Tham PHraya Nakhon cave chamber contains a temple , breathtaking, absolutely amazingly beautiful, and well worth the 50 mins up hill climb slog,  we passed many people who gave up, you can see the scale of it if you look closely there's a man stood in the temple

You plan in advance, wait for ages with growing impatience and anticipation, spot the approaching smoke, the excitement builds, then suddenly it's here and gone in an instant. Motor racing is probably much easier! Only get a couple of steamers a year locally and this was the second. And boy, was it moving!

Can't say it's my best but I'm very pleased with what the CP'd Canon G11 will turn out - from last weekend:

The image is Dream and the reason for taking it was the two guys apparently worshipping the sculpture (though actually finalising the lighting - another shot I'll be wanting to get!) - shot with my dog-walking camera!

Spent Sunday night and Monday morning in the Lake District  ( Borrowdale area ) to update a few shots. The first shot ( Buttermere ) below was the hardest having negotiated the Honister pass I had to wait about 2 hours for the wind to calm down and for people to get out of the way. One couple realised what I was doing and told me they would sit to the left out of picture which was very good of them but then he started throwing stones into the water for his dog not realising I was waiting for a calm water shot. Anyway I got the shot about 9.00 pm when everyone had gone then it was back over the Pass to Borrowdale to my tent and a few pints in the local pub.

Dawn was much better at Derwentwater not a soul in sight until about 8.30 am  when a woman turned up in her car took one snap with her compact and drove off .( Pays off to be there early on a Monday morning out of the main holiday season ).

Seeing Geoffs pictures of this plane yesterday reminded me I wanted to see it so I checked the flight arrivals and set off to the Airport Pub ( Manchester Airport ) which has a viewing garden at the end of the runway.

While the plane was impressive it looked a bit boring compared to a 747 Jumbo jet.

Geoff you can attach your pictures here straight from you computer to see them larger. Copy the sizes I have uploaded then when you see them here click on the picture to fill the screen.

By the way when you reply to this post you will see ( Attachments and other options ) below the text you are typing. This is were you upload your pics straight from your computer.

Took myself of to Lytham Jetty . I had this idea of creating an album cover ( Delamanda's idea for the comp a week or so ago ) Anyway it was a Manfred Manns Earth Band Album cover I was thinking of ( 70's stuff ) which had a figure running down a runway to take off.

I spend to much time in the shop now and needed to get out and do something ' Creative ' so this is it. I set up the camera on my tripod and used my remote to take the shot when I thought I was roughly in the right area.

Thought we'd have a go at powerboats on Sunday - well, it got us out of the house! Only 6 boats took part but we had a pretty good time - think we'll be back! :)

Were you Blinded by the Light?  :2funny:

;D :2funny:  I have forgotten the album title now, but it had ' Davey's on the road again ' on it

Yup! Watch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_(Manfred_Mann's_Earth_Band_album) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_(Manfred_Mann's_Earth_Band_album))

The Roaring Silence was the first album for which I actually splashed the cash - had recorded loads onto tape before!  ;)

I think as a result of members on the forum giving good advice I have managed to get a good image over the weekend one that
I am very pleased with.
As a result I am always open to comments good or bad,  as some members know I find it hard at times to get to were I need to be
to get a shot, if I can not get my wheel chair to the right spot or if I can not set up my tripod as in the shot below having only one
hand does not help (more so on long exposures),    this shot below I took balanced on a rock in the middle of a river.
Thanks again
Geoff

'Balanced on a rock in the middle of a river' - that's dedication for you!!

I really like this photo Geoff, and it's clear you have listened to the advice and got the result you deserved.
For me, the composition works and the photo has a nice balanced feel to it.
And I think you've done really well with the exposure on what can be a difficult one to get right. I can't help but feel that a tripod may have helped here, getting a sharper image, but I appreciate the difficulties you have.
The effect on the water is great (I think this is what you were after?!?)
Now I'm going to be really picky, ridiculously so. The green sight in the top right corner - it's a little (very little) bit distracting, but I did go looking for something.

You should be really pleases with this Geoff.

These are just my thoughts. I'm sure others will have a different view point, but that's the beauty of photography.

Good work.

Thanks Chris,  I can see exactly what you are saying, I think I spent that much  time cloneing out
a group of people  and red fire boxes from that part of the  image so I think I just got  carried away a little.
I would have used a tripod however I would not  have been able to get it set were I was,     I had a  friend with
me whom was holding what is left  of my left arm, also not  being steady  on my legs I  was winging  it a little
I took notes with  me that I got of you guys a great help when you have a mind like mine,  they were a great help.

Thanks again Chris and  all  :)

I've never photographed a tennis match before, as I do not see many games. But, when I was in Holland, my friends' three very talented kids had to play and I happily tagged along.
This is nine year old Lieke who made quite an impression. And won.

I like them due to the light and colours and there is some HDR malarkey going on with these as well.

I really like the depth within the shot, and the rays of light work well in leading the eye to explore the patterns of light upon the background. However (in my humble opinion), the darkness of tones in the foreground do not hold sufficient detail to retain visual interest, and perhaps carefully lifting that aspect may improve the overall balance of the composition.

I quiet like the general colour balance in both shots Jeff (although viewed together the second shot gives a washed out feeling), however the buildings alignment, lens distortion? throws my eyes off a bit.

Is the Chromatic Aberration or the effect of it purposeful?

Andy,

I did not think that there was much in either picture especially around the buildings where you would most likely find it.

Lens was a 10mm I think so maybe a bit of distortion but hey, I quite like them, know what you mean about the second shot though.

Perhaps it is just an inherant effect Jeff. But when viewed larger on screen, I can see very distinct Red halo lining in both shots (feinter in the second shot) that I associate with Aberration.

Just enlarged the picture by 300% on my 28" screen and I CAN see some red halo around some of the buildings and yes you are correct but in normal viewing I can see nothing.

Don't over do it Chris. If it were mine I would just isolate the grass foreground, lift the Exposure level a wee tad and adjust the Saturation to rebalance (on a seperate layer) making the most of the sun rays passing through as a starting point.

Fabulous shot Chris, you should be proud of this one. Not sure if it's me, but there appears to be a slight problem in the cloud formation top left, where the cloud appears to be in a straight line, very easily corrected, if indeed it is a problem caused by Photomatix.

You're quite right.
I used a free download of photomatix so I get the 'Photomatix' watermark everywhere. I have to clone stamp it out, but clearly didn't do a very good job there. I should buy the full version to avoid this.

I like the foreground in this shot and the sun burst  although the depth of view is better in the other shot, and in this one the lit top right corner grabs to distract from the overall composition.

To my mind and experience, sunrise and sunset photographs often require Graduated Processing to afford the impression of 'capturing what the human eye really sees and registers.'

Monday is generally my day off  ( from the shop / studio )  which means weather permitting I get myself of to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales. The good thing about having a Monday as my Sunday is that these places are not as populated by the weekend day trippers. Here are a few images from this Monday's trip to The Dales. The first two shots are of Aysgarth Falls, made more famous by the Hollwood film " Prince of Thieves ". The next two images are at Cray. Another area used as a backdrop for the Hollywood version of " Wuthering Heights " in 1992.
Well that's my Passion for Landscapes sorted for this week. Now back to editing last weeks Wedding, Some Product Photography, Passport Photos and another Wedding on Saturday. Roll on Retirement whenever it may happen !

Great area for landscape photography.

I visited a World War I fort on Sunday, and Dutch wedding photographers, in their quest for the new and unusual, are flocking there to get a different shot. I took a photograph of one of the favourite backgrounds, and if it 'works out,' I'll upload it here.

Decided to make a video of a few Landscape shots with help from my best mate  Mark with the music. This is more of a try out than anything else so here it is ( Opinions as always appreciated )
feature=youtu.be   And to be fair to Mark  here is a video I recorded of his band " Shallow Waters " at a festival in the Midlands last Sunday ( Mark is the lead guitarist on the right of the screen

Both videos are best viewed clicking on the youtube  link on the videos once you have pressed the play button.

Now I know and remember who northerndave is , 1 from the images and 2 from the word Skellum in the second video. Hello again Dave! Glad to see you're still going along well in the profession.

The top video brings together some beautiful images and the music moves them along nicely. The match between the picture content and the mood of the music is unusual, in as much landscapes are usually  accompanied  by a more flowing theme, whereas this combination is the opposite, and it works.

There are a number of occasions where a gradual transition between images could work rather than a snap change. This can result in a 'third image' appearing during the transition. It's  a question of taste and I just mention as a suggestion.

That's  my two pence worth.

Thanks Abers & Reinardina.     Yes I have the fade in /out  transition which would of looked much better but unfortunately not enough music to fit it all in.  The name Skellum came from when we emigrated to South Africa in the 60's, its what the local ( Afrikaans ) Police used to call us young English Immigrants. In Afrikaans it means ' Rouge or Scoundrel '. It also pops up in a Robbie Burns Poem.
I used it over here as my Agency Name when I was a Sports / Football League Photographer to try and catch the attention of picture editors when they were fishing through their e.mails. :)
