Title: Speakers Corner Meet - moved to identify this meet only...
Post by: picsfor on September 05, 2009, 10:08:48 AM
To be held on 20th September which is a Sunday.

The plan is to visit Speakers Corner and photograph the opinionated, and the rowdy crowd who come to cheer or boo!

It has been suggested that the best place to meet is Hyde Park Corner, and the best time is 11:00 - so that is the time i am proposing.
This will allow time to have a bit of a wander round other local photographic attractions and also get a tea or coffee before we place ourselves for the main attraction of the day.

It is hoped the Mr Abercrombie will be attending so any one not sure how to photograph strangers and Joe Public will be able to witness a master at work  Wink

These events are designed to be enjoyable meetings of people who wish to enjoy a days (or half day as time allows) photography irrespective of kit or experience.
Newbies are just as welcome as pros - and digital compacts are just as welcome as D3x's or 1Ds MkIII's.

At these meetings - they all get put into the same hat.

Hopefully we can get a gallery set up where by we can post some samples of the days work. I have always found it absolutely amazing that you can visit a place with a group of people and see the same things and yet "miss" the pictures they take - or gain inspiration to take that sideways look the next time you visit a place with a camera.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask - either through this thread, via e-mail or PM.

I only live down the road from Speaker's Corner but unfortunately can't make it as I'm taking my son to Birmingham Uni on Sunday. Don't forget to take some shots of the horse's head. It's a huge statue by Marble Arch. As you go further down Park Lane there's a monument to the animals that were in the wars. Have a good one.

OK then, hands up who doesn`t read post properly!    A thumbs up is as close as I can get to a hands up smiley...

So, 11am Hyde Park Corner.

Whereabouts on HPC?  I don`t really know it that well on foot.

Don't forget HPC is not Speakers' Corner, that is at Marble Arch. 11am will give you time to have a wander around the Serpentine and stroll up to Marble Arch for about 12.30. If you want a meeting place I would suggest the large blackstatue of Achilles or Mars just inside the gates at HPC.
Other places of interest at HPC are the war memorials to the Anzacs and the Royal Artillery (WW1) that can be reached by the pedestrian underpasses at HPC or pedestrian crossings if you are fleet of foot.

There's a coffe kiosk at Speakers' Corner, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices for London.

Latecomers can meet there. Both HPC and Marble Arch are served by underground stations.

Weather still looking good.

Just back from a week away - i say we go with Alans' suggestion of meeting at the large black statue of Achilles or Mars At he gates of Hyde Park Corner.

How will we know each other - some of have met before but in general we will all be wielding some sort of tog gear, a tripod, camera rucksack or something.
If you see a group of people looking at a K7 then that will be us looking at Sandy's new toy  ;D

I will clarify all tomorrow once i have recovered from my week of travelling.

Firstly thanks for the invite, Eileen thanks for the pm that was very decent of you, and I've sent you a reply as well..

Looking forward to it, it should be a good day, some of us are aiming to get on the train that runs through Surbiton at 10:00am and gets to Waterloo about 20mins later, then it's a short hop on the tube.

I believe the plan is to meet at Waterloo station outside the M&S if we miss each other on the train, and then make our way to Hyde Park from there....

If every one is coming in from south of the Thames maybe Waterloo at 10:20 by the M&S would be an easier meeting point.
Those travelling on Southern and South Eastern services can go straight to Waterloo East and those travelling on South West Services can travel straight to Waterloo.

This is just a suggestion mind you - any advances are more than welcome.

Just to make you all aware -I heard earlier that they are expecting something like 50,000 cyclist in the streets for this skyride malarkey so the streets are gonna be busy in town with all the diversions and stuff

thanks for the heads up.

On a plus side it means we'll have some charged up speakers and listeners as cycling normally provokes polarised opinions.

I've set up a new category "CC meet-ups"  in the gallery.  First album call "Speakers Corner Meet".   I'll add albums as the various meets take place.

As you can see I'm still here and could not make it to this meet for reasons beyond my control.  But hopefully I'll get to come to one / some of the meets in the future.   Hope you guys are having a great time, and look forward to seeing some of the pics.  ;)

It would be great if you could make it along another time, Mick.

Many thanks to Andrew for organising this.

Well, I`m absolutely shattered!

It was really good fun, I`ll freely admit to being aprehensive before the shoot.  People, and especially street photography is well out of my comfort zone.  But after taking a few, I really started to enjoy myself.

I`d definitely go again.  It was great to meet up with everybody again.  I`ve stuck some quick edits up in the gallery done via DPP, but I`m going to re-edit later.

Are you going to start a thread about the results of this meet? Lovely to see the pictures but I'd like to know more about them in context - to hear a bit about what they were arguing for and, for those of us who've never been there, what the area's like and which characters impressed you with their rhetoric 8)
Title: Re: Speakers Corner Meet - moved to identify this meet only...
Post by: picsfor on September 21, 2009, 07:38:52 AM
Briefly - Speakers Corner is a part of Hyde Park where people can turn up and have a rant about what ever they want.

For the most part, it is very much those with a religious bent that were doing the talking although the wars did come into at one or two points.
If you've ever seen the film "Monty Pythons Life of Brian" - there is a section where "Reg" falls into a group of "speakers" and comes with with such classics as "consider the lilly" and "blessed are the cheese makers"
It was very much like that.

The main characters for us were "the Cowboy", "Lenin", and "the chap by the lamp post". Fringe characters also existed such as the man in the apron, the elderly lady whose rants would have got her arrested any where else and of course our favourite who didn't want his picture taken and accused Sandy of being "a secret picture taker". You do not turn up at speakers corner and engage the main players of the day and then complain about having your picture taken. It's like being the B&G coming out of a church to find people taking lots of pictures of you and accusing them of "being secret picture takers". Many were apparently regulars and well known to Alan who uses this location as source material.

Some of the comments were thoughtful, some considered, some just plain rude, others very funny and the rest was either so far off the beaten track or so in your face aggressive it was jaw dropping.

This is  just a brief explanation, but i hope the others will come in with their take on the day.

Hope this helps a little bit.

I have a piece on Speakers' Corner on my web site, see link below, if it works. My Blurb book has a subtitle "The Best Free Show In Town" which I think those that went would agree with.

I have to say there are some great pictures of the days events.

The only one missing is Keith's shot of the Cowboy. Still going through mine and working out if anything will add to what is already posted.

It really was a great day and has probably increased my confidence to not worry so much about taking pictures in the street.

Sorry been a bit busy these last couple of nights, uploaded the cowboy shot now into the speakers corner gallery ...It was a fantastic day out and I reckon we should do it again, in fact i was telling a couple of people at camera club about it on Monday night and they're up for it, so maybe mid Oct?

Thanks for the comments about converting my image to black and white. I have tried twice since I posted the last one which was soft down the left hand side of the beard and was not able to get a better result. I sent a copy to a friend who is also in a camera club and he pointed out that there is not enough definition between the left hand side of the character's hat and the left hand side of his beard with the background the result will always be slightly soft so a camera club judge would notice this straight away. Since I actually managed to get my first 20 last week with the dog weaving though the poles I do not want to enter a image that is not quite right.
Thanks again

Sandy

Sandy, I hope you won't take offence but don't just take photographs to please the judge, take 'em to please yourself. I'm a great believer in camera clubs, I belong to one myself and judges play a part in the competitive side of things. Having said that they are also a drag on inventiveness, expression and development. Once you know what the judges want and try to please them instead of yourself  you are trapped!

I rejoined my club again after 20 years absence and the same people that were there when I left were still there presenting the same pictures because their ideal was to get a 10 each month. The worst thing I sat through recently was a talk about 'What The Judge is Looking For', not once did the speaker mention a fresh approach or try something different, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't recognise it anyway.

By the way congratulations on your 20!

Thanks I understand what you are saying, however it was a really nice feeling last Tuesday. Iam in class2 which is the lower class there is also a class1 in competitions and this weeks judge actually gave me first and second place and two twenty's and I have never had twenty before and then he chose one of my photos has best print of the evening so I felt like I was walking on air. I do like taking all types of photos and hopefully I will get that feeling again of winning but I just like meeting up with other people in the club and talking about photography.

Well done on your pictures winning. It's nice when others see what you think is a great picture, but as ABERS say's always take pictures that you like and enjoy. I don't belong to any clubs, but from what I've heard cruel comments can destroy a persons love of photography, and trying to please those people can stunt your growth as a great photographer.  ;D
