Title: Gas Holders are going.
Post by: Oldboy on January 29, 2015, 09:35:11 PM
The National Grid is removing the old Gas Holders or Gasometers which ever you prefer. All major towns and cities had these to hold the coal gas produced by burning coal. A byproduct of this was Coke used to produce heat for furances and stoves. See more here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-30405066#  :(

How recently were they used?  I have seen old photos over here with them but nothing newer than maybe the 1940s.

As a kid I could never work out how they went up and down (Still can't!). Did they come out of the ground Thunderbirds style?

They were used until the 1980's when they stored north sea natural gas.  8)

Almost. Think of them as Russian dolls in reverse or a pocket telescope. As they came out of the ground each secton would be a bit smaller but you would only notice this up close.  ;D
