Title: CHAT-WATER DROP-Weekly Comp 14-20 Oct 2013
Post by: Hinfrance on October 14, 2013, 08:30:16 AM
CHAT thread for the WATER DROP weekly competition, from 14 October - 20 October 2013

ENTRIES THREAD can be found HERE (http://cameracraniums.com/forum/index.php?topic=3595.new#new)

Anything with a watery droppy theme, from raindrops on kittens to water drop setups, although I would especially like to see efforts at the latter which I have never managed to get quite right but which are, nevertheless a lot of (soggy) fun to try.

HERE (http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/06/20/h2-oh-5-cool-water-drop-photography-ideas-and-1-really-simple-set-up/) is how the auld enemy shows it can be done, and HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEc4rubMPv0) is a YouTube video on the topic. There are loads of other tips and tutorials out there. Don't be afraid to have a go, and really all you need is a bit plastic tube, a pyrex dish (or sink) and some pegs. Oh, and an amazing sense of timing. Off camera flash is useful, but you can jury rig a reflector if you only have on camera flash available.

Pictures to be taken between 00.01am Monday 14 October to 23:59pm Sunday 20 October 2013.

Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59pm Monday 21 October 2013.
Poll will be up Tuesday 22 October.

Winner to be announced Saturday 26 October

The Rules for the weekly competition are:-

By entering you agree to take responsibility to:
post a topic on the Sunday following your declared win
create an entries thread
create a chat thread
create a poll for that weeks comp and declare the winner on the Saturday
(if for any reason there is a problem and no subject is posted by the winner by Monday night admin will advise second place winner to post the topic asap, do the poll etc)

In case of a tie, the first entry posted wins.

Water should not be a problem, but the 'set up droppy' bit is not for me. Haven't got the equipment and also lack time and patience at the moment. But I'll get something watery.

My poor hubby is in despair when I do this.....he has visions of the light I hang my water bag from, coming away from the ceiling..and yes, I know, water and electricity don't mix!!! Love doing this though, so looking forward to it.

Jeff, these are good. I prefer the one with the less busy background, as the busy one takes the eye from the drop

I'm off the opposite opinion Jeff, I really like the more complex one, the internal reflections in the drop are quite something.

Not sure I should bother, having see what you can do ;)

I just can't lay my hands on my retort stands, my wife last saw them when she used them to support her hollyhocks! :o

I've got a tripod somewhere in the loft but what with no off camera flash either it looks like I'm scuppered this week, added to the fact that the old chap two doors up refused to cooperate with the dew drop idea.

There are plenty of other drop types to choose from Alan.

I think I might do a couple of shots with no remote release, on camera flash and an aluminium foil reflector, just to see if it can be done.

Got soaked to the skin doing my ranger work, so plenty of drops! Too wet to take the camera out though.

I won't do a jumping droplet, but I'll find something. I hope.

To me water drop means a drop of water, for example a dew drop, a drop hanging from a tap, a rain drop on a window...the theme didn't specify high speed water drop photography.

Does it have to be water, Howard?  I tried one with milk a few years ago, and would be interested in trying something with paint after watching this cool video.  In it two guys pour paint on an old speaker and turn it up to full volume while recording in super slo mo.

Chris, does say the following if you are interested in trying, other than that a raindrop would do.

Anything with a wateryg droppy theme, from raindrops on kittens to water drop setups, although I would especially like to see efforts at the latter which I have never managed to get quite right but which are, nevertheless a lot of (soggy) fun to try.

Maybe I should have taken a shot of the water dripping fast through my landing ceiling before I managed to turn off the stop cock and call the plumber! Waiting for him now :(

It will still be dripping, so get your camera and shoot away.
If it is an English plumber, you'll have plenty of time.

No - plumber`s now been and done the job 15 mins before he said he`d get here. £75 lighter for new ballcock and gubbins. Maybe I should not have bought that used 50mm 1.4 lens earlier after all ;)

Ogga, playing around with milk or paint could be mesy fun - rather you than me - although in fairness the theme is water drop and there are some entries already in. So I think we had better stick to water for this week. Of course you can colour it or thicken it I suppose, as long as it water to start with.

Sorry to hear about your ceiling Paul - make sure it doesn't collapse on top of you.

Just spent some time mucking about with water and sundry bits and bobs. Like Alan I don't have any retorts, and I can't find my microphone stands anywhere (how do they manage to hide?), so I used a step ladder with an old bit of wood on it to make a high up platform for an old 2 litre plastic bottle to be the header tank, got a piece of plastic tubing and fixed it to the head of an (unplugged) desk lamp placed about 40cm above a Pyrex™ bowl on a workmate in the garage. I didn't bother with a remote release, just squeezed the shutter gently. My main problem was focusing. I was using the macro lens, which I think was a mistake as it does not have sufficient depth of field to get the whole of a splash sharp.

I did try with on camera flash with the Lumix, but that was just too bright, and I didn't have time to muck about too much with that. I took some pictures of the setup, but then deleted them by accident. File recovery software can't find them, alas.

Never in the field of human endeavour has so much effort been expended to achieve something so mundane! ;)

It seems to be turning out to be a test of dexterity and mechanics rather than a test of photography.

I'm thinking calling in Heath Robinson for help to invent a water drip apparatus that will ensure a picture that doesn't resemble the other million or so out there.

The problem is, if it is a jumping water drop, it will resemble the others.
I'm not particularly keen on them, so I won't even try.
Not having the space, time or right equipment would make it a real struggle. And all for something I don't really want to do.

Weather forecast seems good for other types of drop though, so I haven't given up altogether.

Reinardina, you could drop something into water, that would be a "watery droppy thing" as per brief.

I know, but I want to do it outside, in a puddle or a stream. The weather forecast may indicate, it has to be raindrops. Maybe falling in a puddle, if I can 'get' it without getting my camera wet.
I'll see what I can do, as I am a bit housebound at the moment.

Here is my entry, my gorgeous border collie who has an obsession with water. Not quite a watery, droppy image, but I've no hope to get one like those shown. It does have water drops though

Well, went out for a ride, washed bike and saw this, on theme as a watery drippy thing so in with this, macro shot of the bike chain complete with drip.

Reinardina, yes got a bit bogged down this time with a techie side of a water drop photo so found something simpler but I hope just as good, I do like close up shots isolating something, we will see what happens.

I picked up my camera yesterday after being repaired by Harrison Camera's in Sheffield, really good quick service.

I've gone away this weekend so no computer to tweak images, the only thing I've got with me is the tablet so had to tweak the image on that, really not sure what the picture looks like as I'm sure the screen colour is all over the place.

I've found on the tablet that I cannot find the upload link on the site, clicking on gallery takes me to a list of all the gallerys but no option to upload.  I've had to upload the picture to Flickr and post the link from there. If this is going to be an issue with creating the poll the just leave my picture out.

Being more or less housebound at the moment, I tried something similar, as it was the only opportunity to get drops.
Don't think it came out well though. Haven't seen it on the laptop yet. I'll have a look tomorrow.

I agree with OB that, in this case, similar shots are different enough for entry.
