Title: Help - Silver surfers
Post by: bones615 on January 16, 2011, 12:06:41 AM
Need to find some very basic windows training, my parents have a laptop and know how to check mail, look at ebay etc but are amazed at the fact that I can find, create, rename, move files. Even copy & paste is a new concept.
Any sites you are aware of? books? Any ideas would be helpful and save me a lot of explaining over the phone, popped over this morning to install thier printer & ended up staying 3 hours trying to explain basic concepts but i dont think it will stick without them doing it themselves & understanding how + why.

It one of the most difficult topics to teach, as you do things without thinking, and when asked to explain it, it can confuse you. There is a lot of help build into windows and you can access it by Right Clicking Start/Windows Icon on the taskbar. Then select Help and Support. Click Windows Basic Icon and the select each topic in turn to learn different skills. You can also type a question into the Search Help box and it will take you to that topic that matches your search. The most important skill to learn is using the mouse and the Primary/left button which will list commands that you can select by just clicking them.

Computers for Seniors for Dummies is a good basic book that you can get from your local booksellers and I've put a link below.

The BBC is doing a program called First Click throughout the country and I've posted a link below.

Local councils also run courses at local libraries and other sites, and you can find these on their websites.

AgeUK also have help on learning about computers and I've posted a link below. Hope that helps.

Thanks Oldboy i will pass on the links, just found "Microsoft Interactive Training" in Accessories on my XP machine, not sure if its available on thier vista system but it seems a pretty good idiots guide as it gets them doing stuff while they are learning.

It's a piece of cake today, but years ago when you had to use the command line........ :o

I still use the command line.  :) More so with my Linux machine, but just the other day I was using the command line on my iMac to clear out the DNS cache. Sometimes it's just easier, as most modern OS's are designed to dissuade mom and pop from tinkering with things.
