I have the above on my pc but it wont play any video of the files I have downloaded only sound.
its the same for avi and dvix etc
In previous versions of media player there was a tab in options for file types.
This is not present on my vista machine. Why is this?
had a quick look for codecs but I am only offered paid versions
Any ideas ?

Play absolutely everything. Including the files that you have downloaded which I'll guess are mkv 'cos WMP doesn't understand this new fangled stuff..
WinAmp seems to play most things too, and there is a free version.
Or, of course, the files could just be corrupt . .

I found some codecs which are clean and actually work.
I have VLC on another pc and its ok for certain uses.
Winamp was a star years ago but is very unstable and prone to corruption now from my experience.
If you had installed VLC on the machine you are using then all the codecs would already be available, as the full codec pack is part of the programme.
Unstable doesn't even begin to describe WMP in my experience. 'Extremely irritating' gets close.
