I am having problems with very slow performance from my pc, thought i had a virus but when i looked in task manager part of the avg antivirus (avgrsx.exe) was using all the available cpu, can not find any useful help on the web so I have downloaded Avast which seems ok but does not like playing with zone alarm.
Anybody having similar probs with avg?
Any views on Avast?

Simon, have a read through this thread, and see if it helps,

Thanks Mick, I had seen these or similar but disabling the resident sheild seems to defeat the object of having antivirus. The Avast program has good reviews but I am getting old - don't like change or learning new things !!!

Not good is it. Wonder if there'll be a fix for this soon.
I have in the pat installed Avast on a couple of friend's machines alongside Zone Alarm - although there is a conflict warning they have not had any problems - I think it depends upon what services you are using on the web.
This sounds familiar!
I had the paid version on my PC for several years - then all of a sudden it stopped updating automatically. So I checked the website did everything and nothing helped. I contacted them via the website - and it took a month for them to come back to me- which for the paid version was unacceptable!
In the meantime I un-installed it and put on NOD32 - which is faster, less resource hungry and does the job as well.
AVG used to be really good - but seems to have lost the plot recently.
Avast antivirus seems to be doing the job, only downside so far is that I can not set it to scan automatically. I also did a registry check for the first time ever & found over 400 unwanted items that were removed, this was a "free" microsoft service I found here

Latest update - Been having trouble connecting any antivirus sites having to download through mirror sites, various forums suggested spybot which I managed to download only to find it would not run until it updated which it could not do as something was blocking the connection. Microsoft saved the day after reading some scary "you will not find it" posts. Used the live onecare site again for a free scan & it found something AVG & avast had missed. I am now able to access antivirus sites again & spybot is currently scanning. I know MS are the big bad money grabbers but I am impressed - not enough to buy onecare though! Free full scan here.

I had trouble connecting to the updates earlier today and incidently could not connect to my btyahoo accounts.
I updated my CCleaner, ran that, rebooted and then all ok.
Never seen anything nasty in logs so no idea what caused my issue
