Title: CHAT-Weekly Comp-Phrase or Saying-17-23 Sept
Post by: Hinfrance on September 16, 2012, 07:40:44 PM
This week's challenge is to represent pictorially a well known phrase or saying. I know we've all done it a few times before, but I have an urge for some levity. So have some fun.

Pictures to be taken between 00.01am Monday 17th September 2012 to 23:59 Sunday 23rd September 2012 .
Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59pm Monday 24th September 2012.
Poll will be up Tuesday 25th September 2012.
Winner to be announced Saturday 29th September 2012.

The Rules for the weekly competition are...

By entering you agree to take responsibility to
Post a topic on the Sunday following your declared win
Create an entries thread
Create a chat thread
Create a poll for that weeks comp and declare the winner on the Saturday
(if for any reason there is a problem and no subject is posted by the winner by Monday night admin will advise second place winner to post the topic asap, do the poll etc)

In case of a tie, the first entry posted wins.

Photos to be taken during the specified dates, ie Monday xx to Sunday xx

Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59 Monday night

Last time I did this, I had hubby lying on the bed and I slapped a poached egg on his face, then burst the yolk so it ran down his face!!!! No way will he do this again. (egg on your face...)

I suppose you'll just have to think of something new that doesn't involve spousal abuse.

Personally I'm hoping jinky can come up with another one of his appalling puns.

Would have been ideal for me, as I may not have too much time. Sadly (or, more probably, otherwise) my lens cap jumps off, the minute I turn on my camera.

Appalling puns how dare you! I`ll have you know I entered 10 of my  puns into a national competition in the hope at least one would do well! unfortunately  no pun in ten did.

Now, does this mean they're too appalling to appeal, or not appalling/appealing enough?

My first thought with Andy's picture, was of a 'chin wag.'
H's baffles me, but I've never been strong in cryptic descriptions.

I'm stuck in a rut, as, for some reason, the phrases that spring to mind are often Dutch, and don't always have English equivalents.
I've got a few in mind, but am still on the lookout for a better one.

Fingers crossed!

Mine - try counting the out of focus sweets in the background.

I'd never have guessed it.

Still stuck in a rut; can mainly think of proverbs or phrases that are virtually impossible to shoot, without a lot of preparation.

I may however enter this one. A sneaky one, shot more or less under the eye of two police persons. The shopping centre does not encourage photography, to say the least, so it was a quickie, while innocently 'looking the other way.'

I think it will be easy to guess by you clever clogs, and even the less clever, will have no problems.

Could be either, I suppose, but it's not what I had in mind.
I see the shot is rather dark-ish, I'll see if I can tart it up a bit, before entering it. If I can't find anything better, that is.

And I don't 'see' your saying Jinky. Maybe it's too early in the morning, maybe I don't know it, or more probably, my mindset isn't suited to this kind of thing. I've noticed it in the past. I simply don't see things, unless the proverb is very well known and very easy to spot, like DD's.

Not so much a proverb as a well known saying from the past (in advertising in the early 60s I think) Reinardina. Showing my age here but I am sure H or Andy will get it in a while. Accredited falsely by some to Fay Wewldon ( she says she just used it in her campaign and did not come up with it herself).

Is yours standing in line then?

You're spot on as far as the occurrence is concerned, but I didn't stay long enough to see them leave through the window. This is only a small section of the queue; it snarled all over the first floor of the shopping centre. Everyone kept in place, with rope barriers and blue T shirted 'handlers.'
But you haven't got the proverb yet.

No, mine is not standing in line, even though they do.

And I was around in the early sixties, but I lived in Holland, where people still spoke Dutch (they now speak some language which contains many an English word, often mispronounced and not used in the 'proper' way).
Commercial slogans were very much a national thing in those days, and even though we had egg promoting ads, they were purely Dutch.

I did however know the one you pictured, but only after it was 'revealed' by H.

Well, unless it's the shepherd thing Andy, I don't see your phrase or saying either. But it won't be that, as there is that 'column' in the sky, which probably is a clue, but not to me!

And mine is not subtle at all; just think of the patience of those people!

Mine is not the shepherd delight phrase; But the low shooting angle, as well as leaving those horrible thick electric cables unedited (as I contemplated cloning them out), is a big hint  ;)

It still eludes me, but my brain has gone to pulp by now. Spent all morning on line, doing this, that and something else.

Mine's to do with waiting. Well, if that doesn't tell you, I'll severely doubt whether it is a saying/expression/proverb at all!

Going to have lunch now and then I'm going to hunt down a pair of jeans somewhere. M&S didn't have my size (at least not the right length) and I don't want to have to wait.
Wish me luck.

Andy, straight from the hip?

Re, all things come to he who waits? (puts me in mind of the Motorhead lyric, "all things come to those who wait, but the waiting never ends" - could be a new slogan for Apple :))

Paul - I hate fried eggs too, and boiled and scrambled and, well, I just hate eggs.

Don't be mean. They're very good, or so I am repeatedly told :) Although I think that is only as long as you don't want to use it as a 'phone outside of major conurbations. Or try to find a map of the south of England.

Meanwhile I have a lust for the the Samsung 10.1 Note in pearl white- ooh that is so sensual. But I cannot bring myself to part with nearly €500 for half a laptop.

Andy, I can't work out what yours is. Sorry.  :'(

Yes H and Jinky, you're right. Seeing the queue, "XXX come(s) to those who wait" immediately sprang to mind.
Couldn't quite remember what XXX was, thought it was 'happiness'' or 'good things.'

And those who came out of the shop definitely looked happy, if only because they survived the wait. That was, of course before they discovered they could not find their way home.

I just googled the thing and was amazed what comes, to those who wait apparently.  Good sex, all things, good food, nothing, the best, everything, death, Heaven, perfection, love, you name it and it comes, as long as you wait long enough.

Oops just seen the title on your upload. Should have got that. ;)

I spotted the title too, before I realised it was an entry.
Good one Kerry! I would not have guessed it, I think. But as you can see from the posts here, I'm not very good at 'seeing' phrases in photos. Unless something suddenly grabs me by the ... and I see the light. Like my own entry. That one simply jumped out at me.

I think mine's pretty easy!

H - is yours "Sweet Sixteen"?

Andy - Really stuck on this one.  Has Re given us a clue when she said "seeing the light" or is it "Sun's over the yardarm"?

I was going to say "Love Letters" for Delamanda's  :-[

A little poetic license is perhaps needed for mine  :-\ But I was up very very early

@H and Andy - both good guesses but it's not that!  It's a saying that has six words.

@Andy - Crack of dawn?
